Following their debut in 2018 with original work Because It’s FunThe Fool Theatre returns this July with their sophomore work, an all new, original mandarin musical – Rock Guardians of the Sea.

In this play, witness a Singapore legend come to life in this madcap adaptation, directed by The Fool Theatre founder Xavier Kang, and with a book by Terence Chan and music by Jonelle Lim. Sticking to their company’s aim of producing local and original work, Rock Guardians of the Sea invites audience to revisit local myths and legends, through the eyes of ordinary school student Wang Cai. Like most typical Singaporeans, history and heritage for Wang Cai is all about homework and grades. But when he falls into a mythical world and comes face to face with legendary characters such as Xiang Qi, Zhu Pa and Wa Wa, he’ll have no choice but to go on a fantastical journey to discover the significance of Pulau Ubin’s forgotten stories and our modern connections to local history and heritage.

Music, being key to the production, will featured a unique blend of Southeast Asia music elements, as composed by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, School of Music graduating student Jonelle Lim, in her professional debut as a composer, arranger and music director. While Jonelle may be young, director Xavier Kang believes in her skills, and believes strongly in nurturing new talent, and continuing to tell local stories through theatre and contribute to shaping the Singapore cultural identity.

Joined by a creative team comprising Alberta Wileo (Light Designer), Vivien Lau (Set Designer), Valeree Ray Lee (Costume Designer) and Nicholas Long (Choreographer), and starring Abby Lai, Edward Tan, Joel Low, Kimberly Chan and Tanya Ang, get ready to see and hear our local legends in a whole new light as The Fool Theatre premieres Rock Guardians of the Sea this July!
