After glowing five star reviews for original works Electrify My World and Between You and Me, Nine Years Theatre is back for their final show of 2022, with See You, Anniversary playing at the Drama Centre Black Box this September.
Told through the duo-lens of narrator and character, See You, Anniversary is a humorous and heart-breaking tale of two entangled souls that will resonate with anyone who has ever loved someone. See You, Anniversary may be Nine Years Theatre’s last production in 2022, but it is one filled with many exciting “firsts” – Not only is it the first time Nelson wears multiple hats as a Playwright, Director and Actor, but also the first time he is acting for his own company after ten years.
“To direct and act at the same time will not be easy, but I love the challenge!” said Nelson, who will be performing alongside his wife and co-founder of Nine Years Theatre, Mia Chee. It makes sense then that the two of them will also be playing the roles of a married couple in the play.
Mia, who is also the producer for See You, Anniversary, shared her excitement: “I have acted in many Nine Years Theatre plays, but there is rarely a chance to act with Nelson. I am looking forward to it because he is a very good actor.”
In the play, we follow couple Kelvin and Annie, who have been together for 29 years – from the time they met and fell in love, to the time they got married, had a child, and started a business together. The way they maintain their relationship is to always celebrate their anniversary, and to look back on the many firsts in their lives – first date, first kiss, the first time they held hands, the first breakup… However, the reality of life forbids them to keep looking back. In the end, who remembers? And who is reminiscing?
Following the successes of First Fleet, Electrify My World, Between You And Me and Windward Side Of The Mountain, See You, Anniversary marks Nelson’s fifth time writing a full-fledged play for Nine Years Theatre. Through this story about a couple, he looks into how some seemingly mundane events like dating, getting married and having children are milestones that are significant enough for people to want to remember. “Some of the inspiration came from our lives and the people around us, whereas some segments are fictional,” said Nelson.
Nine Years Theatre will be bringing back its signature “Drink and Talk” post-show dialogue after a three-year hiatus. After every performance, audiences will be invited to engage in casual but meaningful discussion at the foyer over drinks sponsored by Pek Sin Choon and CornerStone Wines.
