Canon PhotoMarathon is back for is 17th edition this October at Our Tampines Hub (OTH). In partnership with OTH, all event registration fees collected will go towards ‘OTH Gives Back’, a charity initiative which would help low-income families within the Tampines GRC.

“At Canon, we see photography as a language that speaks to people from all walks of life. This year, we want to get closer to the community by bringing this signature event to the heartlands,” said Mr. Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Domestic Operations, Canon Singapore. “We’re looking forward to the multitude of creative entries from participants which never fail to amaze us, year on year. Through this annual event, it also allows us to continue giving back towards a meaningful cause.”

Mr Suhaimi Rafdi, Senior Director at Our Tampines Hub, said: “Our Tampines Hub is an inclusive lifestyle and community hub designed by residents, for residents. Our OTH Gives Back community outreach project is aimed at building, bridging and enriching our community. Our joint partnership with Canon Singapore embodies the ‘gotong royong’ spirit where everyone works selflessly for the common good of the community.”

The concept of ‘kyosei’ lies at the heart of Canon’s corporate philosophy, which means living and working together for the common good. Holding true to this belief, all registration fees collected from Canon PhotoMarathon this year will be donated to OTH’s charity initiative, OTH Gives Back. ‘OTH Gives Back’ is an annual event that involves engaging beneficiaries as part of OTH’s corporate social responsibility efforts for the community. The programme aims to promote inclusiveness for all members in the community and to give beneficiaries an opportunity to engage in new experiences, learn more about wellness of mind and body and to engage more purposefully with peers within their community at the Hub’s facilities.

Annually, Canon also invites students from Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) to participate in the Canon PhotoMarathon. This year’s participants are from APSN Centre for Adults and APSN Tanglin School. They are two of the four beneficiaries under the Canon Photography Exchange Programme. An initiative that began in 2006, Canon seeks to bring a delightful learning experience to these special needs students through photography, allowing them to express themselves freely and creatively. Activities organised under this programme include photography workshops/outings, and photography contests (such as the Canon PhotoMarathon).

Traditionally held at Suntec Convention and Exhibition Centre, this year’s edition of the Canon PhotoMarathon will be held at Our Tampines Hub. Besides bringing the excitement and action to the heartlands to reach out to a wider community, there will be local movie screenings held in between theme announcements, to allow for a greater appreciation of the arts and movie scene in Singapore. For the very first time, Canon will be collaborating with BlueSG, Singapore’s first 100% electric car sharing service, to launch an onsite mobile phone photography contest. Through this, Canon hopes to expand the outreach to residents and non-camera users, allowing them to be part of the action and to cultivate an interest in photography.

Held annually, the Canon PhotoMarathon challenges photography enthusiasts to push the boundaries as they are given three themes to capture within a timeframe. Participants must submit one image per theme which will be assessed based on relevance and creativity. Participants will have the option to compete in the challenge solo, or in a team of four. Registration fee for solo participants is $15, a team of four competitors can register for $60 and students from MOE-registered institutions can sign up for the Student Challenge for a fee of just $10.

Apart from attractive category prizes worth up to $100,000, the Best of Show winners from the Open and Student categories will win an exclusive spot each in the Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship to be held in 2020. The all-expenses paid trip will bring participants on an exclusive journey of awe-inspiring scenery in Japan, to explore various facets of photography under the tutelage of a professional photographer. The Championship will involve further theme challenges, which will be a test of mettle to select the champion among winners.

Canon PhotoMarathon XVII takes place at Our Tampines Hub on 12th October 2019. For more information about the Canon PhotoMarathon XVII and to sign up, visit their website here
