The full list of jurors for the 2020 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award has been announced, and features Nathan Yong, one of Singapore’s best-known industrial design minds, alongside an eminent line-up of equally renowned industry experts such as Leslie Sun, the Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Taiwan and De Liu, the co-founder and Senior Vice President at Xiaomi. He is joined by fellow Singaporean Yah-Leng Yu, founder of Singapore’s Foreign Policy Design Group, who was previously announced as a juror.
Conferred by the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), the Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award is one of the most influential design awards in the region and will feature international jurors in its preliminary and secondary selections for the first time since the awards’ inception.
Nathan Yong began his career not as a designer, but as a buyer as well as engaging in product development for various companies in Singapore. Through these jobs, he travelled to various countries including India, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia to source for quality manufacturers and craftsmen to develop and manufacture furniture and home accessories. Through this exposure, he learnt various production techniques and crafts. For two consecutive years (in 2006 & 2007), Nathan won the prestigious Red Dot Concept Design Award. Subsequently in 2008, Nathan received the prestigious Singapore President’s Design Award; Designer of the Year, the highest honor accorded to designers from all creative disciplines in Singapore.
Currently based in Singapore, Nathan runs an industrial design consultancy practice. His work has been exhibited also appear in International magazines like Wallpaper, Monocle, Surface, Dwell, On Office, Habitus etc. His clients include Design Within Reach (USA), Ligne Roset (France), Living Divani (Italy), Opinion Ciatti (Italy), Sphaus (Italy), Domicil (Germany), Ethnicraft (Belgium), Grafunkt (Singapore), FOLKS furniture (Singapore) and many others.

Apart from Nathan Yong, other prominent names announced include art agency founder and Vogue Taiwan Editor-in-Chief Leslie Sun, as well as De Liu who is responsible for Xiaomi’s industrial design and product ecosystem. These jurors join the previously announced list of Yah-Leng Yu, founder of Singapore’s Foreign Policy Design Group; influential Japanese product designer Fumie Shibata; Finnish architect Marco Casagrande; Gerald Mark Soto, the 2D animation director of acclaimed New York animation studio Brand New School; and Sonja Schiefer, German industrial designer and director of BMW group Designworks’ Shanghai studio.
The 2020 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award are still open for submissions from now till 9 and 15 July respectively. Registration fee for first 100 entries of the 2020 Golden Pin Design Award from Singapore will be waived by the TDRI.
