Tech Watch: LUMOS TEMPO Wireless Earbuds Review – quality earbuds at a fraction of the price

Best known for their home projector systems, tech company LUMOS is now venturing into the audio-tech market with the launch of their LUMOS TEMPO Wireless Earbuds.

The biggest draw of the LUMOS TEMPO lies in its price point. While most other wireless earbuds costs upwards of $300, the LUMOS TEMPO costs a very affordable $179, a steal, considering that it boasts similar or even superior capabilities and functionality to other products in its field.

After unboxing the TEMPO, we immediately connected it to our Macbook Air, and with its Bluetooth 5.2, the connection was relatively fast and once paired, remained so. Streaming songs on Spotify and shows on Netflix, we found the sound quality satisfactory, with its rich Trinity360 Sound providing a well-rounded listening experience, and able to optimise the bass, midrange and treble in songs.

As with any modern earbuds, the LUMOS TEMPO also boasts noise-cancelling functionality, offering superior Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) of up to 42db, compared to the industry average of 32db, that allows the TEMPO to block out more background noise than other earbuds to deliver superior noise-free audio. Upon connecting to your device, the earbuds default to ambient mode, which allows you to hear any noise in your surrounding environment. Simply double tap the right earbuds to switch to noise-cancelling mode for a more immersive listening experience, and double tap again to turn off noise-cancelling mode.

After a single charge, we were able to use the TEMPO over the course of several days, for an hour or so at a time until it finally ran out of energy and we had to plug it in again. In essence, we estimated it to have at least 28 hours of battery life, allowing us to carry it around without fear of having to leave it charging for extended periods of time.

When conducting an interview, we found the TEMPO’s High Definition (HD) 6-Mic Calling particularly useful, allowing our voice to come across more clearly and sharp during a video call, even during a thunderstorm. Finally, with an IPX5 water resistance rating, there is no fear of the TEMPO fizzling out during a workout or if you find yourself caught in the rain, while the case itself feels quite durable and light for portability.

The LUMOS TEMPO’s biggest drawback is in its case and earbud design. Lightness can be a good thing, but for the TEMPO, it’s unnervingly light, and coupled with the smoothness of the case, makes it a liability, slipping out of your hands if you’re not too careful. In addition, actually removing the earbuds from the case can be a hassle, just a little too snug, and requiring users to pinch the (again, very smooth) sides of the earbuds with some force, before extracting it delicately.

Beyond that however, the LUMOS TEMPO offers great value for your dollar, and if you’re looking for an upper middle range earbud, with all the capabilities and more of any standard device on the market at a fraction of the price, then you’re in luck. Versatile, hardy and durable enough for work, leisure and play, the LUMOS TEMPO can be a great new companion to anyone looking for a new listening device, and whether you’re a student or a PMET, comes at an accessible price to anyone of any background.
