Review: Hanuman by SRT’s The Little Company 2/4/16
There’s a pretty cool new superhero in town, and he’s NOT from Marvel or DC!
We’re not really the intended audience of SRT’s latest production, but we ended up waking up bright and early on a Saturday morning to catch Hanuman, as we’d heard a lot about this collaborative piece of children’s theatre between SRT and UK’s Imitating the Dog.
Hanuman is SRT’s The Little Company’s latest offering for kids aged 7-12, and tells the tale of Hanuman, the monkey god from the Ramayana and Hindi folklore, this time marketed as a superhero vanquishing monsters and demons to save the world. Imitating the Dog is known for the brilliant and visually arresting use of theatrical multimedia, and here, showcased their talent in the form of a completely animated set, projected onto boards behind the actors.
This is the first time we saw anything from Imitating the Dog, and they’ve left a pretty good impression on us, choreographing scenes and screens to perfection with a digitally animated set in eyecatching colours and memorable graphics, and made the short 55 minute performance feel like an epic journey (kudos to the crew who probably spent more hours than we’ll ever know rehearsing the scene changes)
Being a kid’s show, this probably isn’t something you want to come to if you’re looking for a dark and gritty or politically savvy show. But if you have or know anyone with children, we strongly recommend bringing them for this show, imparting values such as believing in themselves and having faith in their abilities. Do note that even as an adult, there were some genuinely terrifying elements in the theatre, such as the image of a floating eyeball that kept watch over our protagonists, and kids might be slightly disturbed. But all in all? You’ll have a whale of a time watching these monkeys sing their way to victory, and you’ll find yourself smiling as you leave the theatre.
