Preview: French Film Festival 2016

The annual French Film Festival is back again! We’re huge lovers of French cinema, and the selection this year is very exciting, with a well curated set of films from the last few years.

Organized by Institut Français Singapour, the French Embassy and Alliance Française, the 2016 French Film Festival presents a selection of 18 films, ranging from cult classics to all new films fresh off their premieres, with a wide spectrum of genres, from heart-wrenching drama to informative, important documentaries.

Still from opening film Monsieur Chocolate

This year’s opening film is Monsieur Chocolat, receiving a screening at the beautiful Capitol Theatre. Directed by Roschdy Zem, the film is a fascinating true story about the life of the first black artist on a stage in France taking place in the 19th century: the fight against racism, mixed with friendship, art and talent, should bring vibrant emotion to the public.

Still from Les Cowboys

Guest of honour and local award winning director Eric Khoo has chosen his selection of must watch films this festival: Les Cowboys by Thomas Bidegain, where actor Finnegan Oldfield will be in attendance on the 11 November screening at Alliance Francaise, Standing Tall by Emanuelle Bercot about the attempt to reform a juvenile delinquent, and Hothead by Jean-Jacques Annaud about a hot-headed soccer right winger. Said Khoo: “There is no other country on earth that cherishes independent world cinema as much as France.”

Still from I Am A Soldier

Other films to look out for this year include All Three of Us by French-Iranian director Kheiron, a comedy-drama based on the life and times of his parents, Sophie’s Misfortune by Christine Honore, a modern fairytale about a girl and her ‘evil’ stepmother, and I Am A Soldier by Laurent Lariviere, about dog trafficking in the north of France, some of which we’ll definitely be reviewing so look out for thos in the coming weeks!
