Preview: Inaugural La Kopi Coffee Festival
Caffeine lovers take note: a brand new coffee festival is in town to perk up your senses and bring quality coffee to Singapore! Hosted by the Singapore Coffee Association, La Kopi 2019 takes place from 25th to 27th January at the Singapore Expo, and promises a fun-filled weekend designed to raise awareness and appreciation of Singapore Coffee and Bakeries.
At La Kopi 2019, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a hankering for a flat white or just want t sit down with a good old Kopi O, as the festival unites the traditional and modern. With coffee, pastries and desserts available, gather your kopi buddies and come explore the almost 70 vendors in attendance, including vendors from Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong.
Besides getting a chance to chill, have a cuppa and build community, guests can also look forward to seeing the first local coffee consumer festival to host a live barista competition sanctioned by the World Coffee Events. Witness the heated contest between the hottest talents amongst baristas in Singapore as they compete to extract the perfect cup of espresso and brew the most flavourful coffee. Coffee enthusiasts will be sure to enjoy this showcase of skill and talent in the annual Singapore National Barista Championship 2019 and Singapore National Brewers Cup 2019. Barista enthusiasts will even be able to rub shoulders with the 2018 Japan Aeropress Champion who will also be at the show with Homeground Coffee Roasters, as well as internationally renowned roasters, such as The Cupping Room HK.
Have a throwback and go back to the good old days with classic activities like marbles (“gor li”), hopscotch, five stones and coffee cupping as well, or sail into the future with millennial-friendly workshops such as block printing on tote bags with WithAutumn, silk screen printing or coffee cup silk screen. Even kids can join in and learn how to be a pizza chef or a cupcake patissier for a day with Mont Calzone (separate costs and booking). Download the La Kopi App during the event, and you might even win prizes during daily lucky draws, with prizes including a return ticket to Milan (worth SGD$3,000) and an OTO WELLNESS Massage Chair (worth SGD$2,980).
For those interested in the nitty gritty aspects of coffeemaking, guests are also invited to participate in an origami dripper demo by Trunk Coffee Japan, Japan pour-over coffee demo by Hoshikuwa, Japan Coffee Cupping and Sharing, as well as a keynote session from the founder of social enterprise and cafe, The Caffeine Experience.
