Liverpool FC emerged as the winners of the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy 2022, beating their fellow Premier League competitors 2-0 in front of a sold-out crowd at the National Stadium on Friday (15 July).
A total of 50,217 spectators roared on the teams, with the cheers of Reds fans reverberating around the stadium when Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson drew first blood in the 13th minute. The celebrations reached a crescendo when fan favourite Mo Salah scored in the 47th minute, and sealed the Reds’ victory.
Says Crystal Palace FC’s manager Patrick Vieira: “We’re never happy to concede goals in football matches but look at the quality of the Liverpool squad. The way they are playing, they make it so hard to defend so we’re not surprised at all. We knew how tough and challenging that game will be and again we’ve to look at our side and I was really pleased because physically it was really demanding. (Meeting our fans in Asia) is something new for us as a football club and to come here during pre-season and coming up against one of the best teams in Europe is always good. We have support around the world, so it is good for us to come around and understand that we are known worldwide and we have fans. That is always good for our players, to spend time with our fans for a couple of days, so that is interesting for us.”
Says Liverpool FC’s manager Jurgen Klopp: “The positive from tonight was the way we played football. We played a good game against United, but we lost 4-0. Tonight we scored two goals, we took our chances and we passed well, we were solid with our defending. When we played against United we were not too solid we were open more, so we were more compact today. We played really good football today and that’s why we scored twice. It was a step in the right direction and this makes me really happy. We have to work a lot in the next four weeks, to prepare for the season. Everything was top class from start to finish, thank you very much Singapore, it was absolutely great and this city is beautiful. My first impression was absolutely outstanding and this won’t be the last time I come here.”
