Art What!: Neo Japan – Pop Art Explored by Onfinitive Project

Onfinitive Project proudly announces Neo Japan: Pop Art Explored, a group show featuring young to established contemporary Japanese artists from well-known figures such as Takashi Murakami and Yoshitomo Nara to emerging artists such as Masato Yamaguchi and Hiromi.

“By bringing these young Japanese artists to Singapore and positioning them next to wellestablished names, we allow them to take their place at the forefront of the NIJIGEN-HA movement as well as gain access to the dynamic Singapore market,” explains Chloe Chiu, founder of Onfinitive Project.

The concept of the show originates from Japanese word “NIJIGEN” (literally meaning “two dimensional”) and the respective “NIJIGEN-HA” (“two-dimensional trend”). The term has come to mean various “Japanese things” where one would typically associate with Japanese games and animation but also distinctive influences from Japan’s innovative industry of fashion and design. Additionally, this phenomenon has contributed to the popularity of Japanese contemporary art.

This exhibition will feature over 60 works including iconic paintings and paper works by world renowned Japanese artists including Takashi Murakami, Yoshitomo Nara and Mr. on loan from Ms. Chiu’s personal collection. Alongside these established names, both the curator and Ms. Chloe Chiu have personally selected and curated 12 of Japan’s most promising up-and-coming stars from today’s contemporary art scene, such as BYNAM, Masato Yamaguchi, Hiroshi Mori, Kojiro Matsumoto, and Rooo Lou. These young artists’ works were specially commissioned for their Singapore debut. For almost all of them, this will be their first time exhibiting in Singapore.

The curator of the exhibition is scholar Ms. Kutsuna Miwa, who has been studying the East Asian art scene for over two decades and teaches at a number of universities. “I am especially excited to show NIJIGN-HA art to the Singaporean audience,” states Ms. Kutsuna.
