At the age of 20, Zhou Dongyu was scouted and cast in reputable director Zhang Yimou’s UNDER THE HAWTHORN TREE 《山楂树之恋》 and has since built a successful acting career. She has won multiple acting awards from her previous feature films including SOUL MATE 《七月与安生》THIS IS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED 《喜欢·你》US AND THEM 《后来的我们》, and BETTER DAYS 《少年的你》. This movie marks her second collaboration with Director Anthony Chen, after THE YEAR OF THE EVERLASTING STORM.

It tells the story of the blossoming relationship among three young adults in their twenties, set over a few short days in the winter snow.

The movie opens in Singapore cinemas from 7 September, being the first territory to release the film after Mainland China on 22 August.

Earlier in May, The Breaking Ice world premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at the 76th Cannes Film Festival to a seven minutes standing ovation, and earned raving reviews from numerous movie critics. The Hollywood Reporter critics selected it as one of “20 Best Films of Cannes 2023” while Indiewire included the film on their list of “14 Best Movies at Cannes.” This is Chen’s fourth outing at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, also marking 10 years since he won the Camera d’or for his first feature, ILO ILO, in 2013.
