New Nanyang is Supermama’s latest collection, exploring and contributing to the evolving language of art objects. The project, which showcases the unique talent of 10 Singaporean artists and the craftsmanship of 10 Japanese manufacturing facilities, draws inspiration from the concept of a New Asian Language. This concept aims to convey the cultural and artistic diversity of Asia in contemporary art, design, and manufacturing, seeking to explore the intersections between art and manufacturing while highlighting the importance of craftsmanship and materiality in the realm of contemporary art.
Each of the 10 selected artists is paired with a Japanese manufacturing facility based on their artistic vision and style. Throughout the project, the artists and manufacturers collaborate to produce 10 distinct bodies of work that encapsulate the spirit of the New Asian Language. The resulting works represent a fusion of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary art, serving as a reflection of the cultural exchange between Singapore and Japan.

New Nanyang, as a collection of art objects, provides a unique opportunity to witness the work of some of Singapore’s most talented artists alongside the exquisite craftsmanship of Japanese manufacturing. The hope is that this project will inspire new dialogues between Singapore and Japan, fostering a deeper understanding of Asian art and culture.
Supermama’s New Nanyang Collection stands as a collaborative endeavour between ten Singaporean artists and ten Japanese manufacturing facilities. This project is rooted in the aspiration to articulate a modern Asian identity, highlighting cultural and artistic diversity through contemporary art and design. By facilitating an exchange of artistic perspectives and craftsmanship, the project serves as a bridge between two rich traditions. The artists’ distinct talents intertwine with the meticulous expertise of Japanese manufacturers, fostering an atmosphere of creative exploration and cross-cultural exchange.

As this ambitious project unfolds, it delves into the profound connection between artistry and production methods. It underscores the significance of craftsmanship in shaping the contemporary art landscape and challenges the conventional boundaries of artistic expression. The New Nanyang Collection not only celebrates the convergence of talents but also encourages a deeper appreciation of the artistry inherent in the act of creation.
