Henrik Ibsen will always be a titan of contemporary theatre, and it’s no surprise that there remains great admiration and adulation for his work. Among them, A Doll’s House remains one of his most beloved, in its future-thinking feminist slant that saw an unhappily married woman break the chains of her nuptial prison, and slam the door behind her in an iconic final scene.
Now, get ready as Pangdemonium! stages the unexpectedly powerful sequel to Ibsen’s classic, with A Doll’s House, Part 2 this March. Written by American playwright Lucas Hnath, the original staging in 2017 received widespread critical acclaim, including 8 Tony Award nominations, and was praised for being a daring and contemporary take on Ibsen’s classic that provides a fresh, modern twist, making it relevant for today’s audiences while remaining deeply connected to the moral and philosophical questions of the 19th-century original.
In A Doll’s House, Part 2, the original’s protagonist Nora Helmer returns 15 years later to confront the consequences of her departure. The play picks up the pieces that the original left behind, revealing the complexity of the past and the emotional aftermath of Nora’s bold decision. Directed by Timothy Koh, A Doll’s House, Part 2 promises a unapologetically modern voice and razor-sharp humour, brought to life by the stellar cast of Jo Kukathas taking the lead as Nora Helmer, alongside Lim Kay Siu (as ex-husband Torvald Helmer), Neo Swee Lin (as Anne Marie) and Rebecca Ashley Dass (as Emmy Helmer).
Even if you’ve never watched the original, Pangdemonium! promises that the play works just as well as a standalone piece, accessible to both newcomers and those familiar with the original play. Cast your fears aside and step into the dollhouse once more, as A Doll’s House, Part 2 arrives this March.
A Doll’s House, Part 2 runs from 7th to 23rd March 2025 at Victoria Theatre. Tickets available here
