If your idea of a perfect night out involves thoughtful cinema, intimate screenings and conversations that linger long after the credits roll, there’s a new space in town to add to your list.
On 1 January 2026, the Singapore Film Society (SFS) opens SFS Somerset, a dedicated screening venue tucked inside Hall 6 of Golden Village Cineleisure. Designed for both members and curious newcomers, the 66-seat cinema promises a carefully curated programme of independent, art-house and Singapore films, many of which rarely make it to mainstream theatres.
SFS Somerset marks a fresh chapter for society, reaffirming the SFS’ long-standing mission to nurture film appreciation and champion diverse cinematic voices in a warm, community-focused setting.
The venue opens with a film that feels perfectly at home in such an intimate space: The Old Man and His Car (2025), the debut feature by Singapore filmmaker Michael Kam.
The film follows Hock, a widower preparing to leave Singapore to live with his son in Canada. Before he can go, he must part with his beloved vintage Mercedes, a seemingly simple task that unfolds into a deeply affecting journey through memory, loss and the quiet courage it takes to embrace change. Gentle and unassuming, the film is a tender meditation on ageing, attachment and human connection.
The Old Man and His Car has already made waves on the international festival circuit, premiering at the Tokyo International Film Festival and screening at the Golden Horse Film Festival, Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival, and the Singapore International Film Festival, where it opened the Singapore Panorama section. Its only local screening at SGIFF sold out, with the full cast and crew in attendance, making this SFS Somerset run a rare opportunity to catch the film on the big screen.
After opening on 1st January, SFS Somerset will operate on a regular weekly schedule, offering eight screenings a week, ideal for midweek wind-downs or weekend culture hopping. These screening times are fixed, as follows:
Wednesday to Friday: 7.30pm
Saturday: 1.30pm, 4.00pm, 7.30pm
Sunday: 4.00pm, 7.30pm
Tickets are available exclusively at www.sfs-somerset.com, priced at SGD $15 for general admission and SGD $9 for SFS members. For frequent moviegoers, SFS offers flexible membership tiers ranging from one to twelve months, unlocking discounted tickets and access to a like-minded film community.
Beyond its weekly film programme, SFS Somerset aims to be a gathering place for conversation and discovery. Audiences can look forward to post-screening discussions, filmmaker dialogues and themed programmes that invite deeper engagement with cinema, all in the heart of Orchard Road. For film lovers seeking something slower, richer and more personal than the multiplex experience, SFS Somerset may just become your new favourite haunt.
