Chances are unless you live in the area, you won’t have properly explored Tiong Bahru Plaza. So we’re here to tell you that over in B1 is a gem waiting to be uncovered – Doodles shake-shake noodles!
Doodles is an all new way of eating your noodles, and does away with the usual need for a bowl. Instead, noodles are now made convenient by having all the ingredients come to you in a packet; all you have to do is shake it up and you literally have some gourmet noodles ready to eat!
The instant noodles aren’t just your generic run-of-the-mill type though; Doodles aims to show variety, giving customers the freedom to choose and experiment with their meal, and offers all kinds of cuisine, from Japanese to Western to fusion.
Even though it sounds so innovative, Doodles’ audience isn’t just young hipsters, but everyone. There’s really something for everyone, whether young or old, vegetarian or not, although it does appeal a lot to women, with about 75% of their customers being female, possibly due to the cute packaging.
Speaking to co-owners, Desmond and Kwee Ann, we found out a little more about their business philosophy. For Desmond, what’s important is his taking pride in serving high quality fresh food, while Kwee Ann treats Doodles as his own baby, both of which show in the food served, which to me makes a great combination. We found out that Doodles imports their soba noodles from Hokkaido, Japan, which is famed for the quality of its food. As such, Doodles does not compromise on the quality of the ingredients, even though they are more expensive to purchase. All their ingredients are fresh, and we’re sure you’ll be sold on them once you’ve had a taste; we sure did!
After trying Doodles, it’s easy to see why it’s such a great concept and why it’s so sought after. The quality of the noodles are really good, the ingredients fresh and tasty, and you’ll be in awe just standing in front of the shop, spoilt for choice from the countless permutations you could have. Being able to customize exactly what you want is a huge plus point and a big draw. Furthermore, it’s also very reasonably priced, at just $5 for noodles and 2 meats and a sauce.
Our favourite ingredient has to be the braised mushrooms, which are prepared themselves, handled with love and class, keeping the integrity of the flavour intact and full. However, all of their ingredients are really good to be honest. We also loved the spicy pork belly, jellyfish (prepared by them), and of course, their yummy smoked duck, which had a perfect fat and meat ratio.
Not to mention, they do great sauces too. All their sauces are pretty original, either reinventing old favourites or coming up with new ones. We’re going to highlight three: their Garlic Sauce, which used an oyster sauce base with soya sauce and fresh garlic, Spicy Sauce, which mixes garlic, chili powder and sriracha sauce, and finally, their Onion Sauce, which as a mix of caramelised onions and vinegar.
So let’s put it this way: come down to Doodles and you’ll be sure to find yourself in good hands, and very soon, in the possession of a tasty meal perfectly suited to your tastebuds.
