Preview: W!ld Rice’s 2017 Season
2016 has been an incredible year for W!ld Rice, bringing back some of their most critically acclaimed hits such as Hotel and Monkey Goes West, along with introducing brand new, quality theatre during the Singapore Theatre Festival. 2017 looks set to be just as exciting, if not more so. Check out next year’s highlights below:
Crossings by young & w!ld (15-19 February)
W!ld Rice’s newest batch of young & W!ld participants will be staging their first public performance in February, featuring a double bill of original plays about the choices that make or break our lives. Led by programme co-directors Rodney Oliveiro and Serena Ho, these young talents are set to leave you with thought provoking performances and usher in a new generation of capable theatre-makers.
La Cage Aux Folles (19 April-13 May)
W!ld Rice brings back their version of Harvey Fierstein’s hit Broadway musical, which won the Straits Times Life! Theatre Award for Best Production in 2013. The story follows the antics of a homosexual couple, half of whom is a flaming drag queen (played by artistic director Ivan Heng himself), who need to play it straight when their son introduces his fiancee’s ultra-conservative parents. Promising over the top numbers, with music directed by Elaine Chan and embracing the value of family and identity, La Cage is a fabulous and fiery way to start off the 2017 season.
Boeing Boeing (23 June – 22 July)
Another classic from W!ld Rice will be returning this June: the classic comedy Boeing Boeing, headed by Pam Oei. Boeing Boeing tells the tale of philandering Bernard juggles his three air-stewardess girlfriends. Book early and strap yourself in – there’ll be a ton of turbulence and loads of laughs throughout your flight!
Grandmother Tongue (28 Sep to 22 Oct)
Making waves and selling out when it premiered at the 2016 Singapore Theatre Festival, Thomas Lin’s Grandmother Tongue was funny and insightful, about a young man attempting to connect with his Teochew-speaking grandmother. Exploring identity and familial ties, this is one play that will touch you regardless of language.
Mama White Snake (24 Nov – 16 Dec)
Continuing their streak of adaptations of classic Chinese folk tales, W!ld Rice ends off their 2017 season with Mama White Snake, their pantomime adaptation of Madam White Snake. When a young man discovers his mother and her best friend are the legendary White Snake and Green Snake, he begins to suffer an identity crisis. Promising both great laughs and great acting, Mama White Snake is sure to slither its way into your heart.
As always, W!ld Rice is set to stun, delight and move audiences come the new year. We’re excited, and will be booking our tickets early. Watch this space for individual previews, reviews and coverage of each show!
