Singapore Repertory Theatre’s past few month of S.O.S. (Save Our Shakespeare) has evidently been a roaring success, because their next edition Shakespeare in the Park is confirmed and stamped in our 2018 theatre calendar!
Next May, SRT takes on Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar for the latest run of Shakespeare in the Park, held, as always in the iconic Fort Canning Park amidst lush greenery. Directed by Guy Unsworth (Hand to God), this production modernizes the Bard’s classic tale of betrayal and political intrigue by setting it against a backdrop of modern-day international relations and global current affairs. The city of Rome becomes a conglomerate of 7 countries known as R.O.M.E., where thunder rumbles, murder plots are brewing, and leader Julius Caesar must eke out his enemies posing as allies before it’s too late.
The modern setting isn’t the only change Julius Caesar will experience in 2018 – the Roman emperor himself will be played by acclaimed Malaysian actress Jo Kukathas, in a genderbending twist to the original play. Jo will be also joined by a stellar cast consisting of Ghafir Akbar (Disgraced), Daniel Jenkins (Hand to God, Romeo & Juliet), Thomas Pang (Hand to God, Romeo & Juliet) and Julie Wee (The Merchant of Venice).
More timely and pertinent than ever as we find ourselves living in a world of corrupt despots and crazed dictators, Julius Caesar promises to offer solace amidst the madness as ambition, power, and greed collide in one epic play. Be sure to bring your picnic mats and baskets, and prepare yourselves for a rip roaring political thriller under cover of the starry night.
Julius Caesar plays at Fort Canning Park from 2nd – 27th May 2018. Tickets available from SISTIC. In celebration of SRT’s 25th anniversary, enjoy a 25% early bird discount from now till 19 Dec 2017. Applicable for 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, and 10th May 2018 performances.
