There are many reasons to be excited about Singapore’s upcoming musical roster. The most obvious one is the return of Disney’s The Lion King for the first time since it debuted at the Sands Theatre seven years ago. In fact, it was the first show hosted by the theater when the Marina Bay Sands opened.
The award-winning show will be traveling through Asia as a celebration of its 20th anniversary on the musical stage. The Asian tour began its journey in Manila in March 2018 and will land in Singapore on June 27th . It will thrill audiences until the last show on August 26th . Orchestrated by celebrated director Julie Taymor, the musical is an adaptation of the homonymous 1994 Disney film. Since The Lion King premiered on Broadway in November 1997, over 90 million people across the globe have experienced its whimsical storytelling and theatrical mastery. In fact, when The Lion King first landed at the Marina Bay Sands in 2011, it played for eight months to over 300,000 patrons, setting the record for the longest-running musical in Singapore’s theatrical entertainment history.
The show has won more than 70 prestigious international theater awards, including Best Musical in 1998. It has been performed in several different languages, including Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish.
Recreating the mystique of the Pride Lands on our shores is no small feat. Audiences will be treated to performances by veterans of the musical’s celebrated Australian, Hamburg, Las Vegas, London and Las Vegas productions. This talented and diverse international cast will bring Pumbaa, Rafiki, Scar, Simba and Timon to life on stage. The performance is an innovative, dramatic and flamboyant spectacle that uses, puppets, props and costumes that practically reach out to the audience. It features intricately designed masks and costumes, in a modern adaptation of traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry.
The Lion King features music created by multi-award-winning artists Sir Tim Rice and Sir Elton John. The famous soundtrack includes beloved classics like “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” “Hakuna Matata” and “Circle of Life.”
You don’t necessarily need to have seen the Disney movie to enjoy the show. But it might be a good idea to preview the film ahead of time, if for no other reason than to fully appreciate the exceptional skill and creativity that has been employed to bring the story to the stage.
