Music Is: Aisyah Aziz and YAØ cover Grease’s ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’

They say the classics never go out of style. “Hopelessly Devoted To You” is a perfect example of that. Since the 1980s, no amount of lovelorn Olivia Newton-John would-bes could diminish its charm. In fact, its recent revival as a TikTok viral hit only shows how its core resonates beyond generations.

Looking back at the past can also spark new creativity. It provided a new idea for Singaporean musicians Aisyah Aziz and YAØ, both singers who explore love and all its complications in their duet.

A straightforward cover, this is not. With their take on “Hopelessly Devoted To You”, Aisyah Aziz and YAØ find out what it means to love in our modern life — to look past differences, and to navigate desire beyond ordinary perceptions or widening distances. The act of undying devotion is vastly different in this day and age. What may have seemed like an act of youthful tradition in the past — gestated through dewy-eyed crushes and forged through wedding vows — seems like a relic in the face of modern romance.

Aisyah’s own ballads have garnered awards, bagging the Best APM Song and Most Popular Song Singapore award at Anugerah Planet Muzik for ‘Senyum Saja’. YAØ is fresh off his latest single ‘I Can’t Sleep’ which soared high on Spotify’s Viral 50 Charts in Singapore. Now, with their combined vocal prowess, the duo breathe new life into this classic love song.

Aisyah Aziz, who first made her name with Akademi Fantasia Season 10, lent her sultry and soul-baring voice to this new take alongside YAØ. Aisyah enlivens the song and its central mode of desire, elevating its lyrics with an intoxicating presence. YAØ, who enters midway into the ballad, adds a new layer of unrestrained yearning to the affair. He shows no sign of hesitance in his performance, which is made all the more surprising when he began the project with trepidation.

“Honestly, I was really nervous working with Aisyah Aziz as she is such an amazing vocalist and artist. But I really enjoyed the process of arranging the cover together because through our discussions, it felt like I got to know her better in person,” he says. “It made me realise that we shared so much in common. The love for music and singing really brought us together and we came up with something special.”

Their fresh take on an old classic is part of a core belief to embrace imagination at Universal Music Singapore. There is a whole world of opportunity for labels to share their catalogue music through developing artists, to have them reinterpret their works in a brand-new light.  The simmering heartache in the original recording of “Hopelessly Devoted To You” is ignited with the sum of two powerful and distinct new voices. It turns a nostalgic ballad into a powerful new anthem for eternal commitment.
