Following the performance meets workshop production RevoLOOtion, along with a series of original solo works in September, in their final show of the year, the Intercultural Theatre Institute (ITI) graduating cohort is set to perform Dario Fo’s Accidental Death of an Anarchist at the Esplanade Theatre Studio this November.

Directed by veteran director Aarne Neeme, Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a play that explores the circumstances of the death of a young Italian anarchist, presenting political corruption through a grotesque farce. Playwright Fo says of the nature of his own theatre:“I just put some drops of absurdity in this calm and tranquil liquid which is society, and the reactions reveal things that were hidden before the absurdity brought them into the open.”

In the play, we follow the story of a man who has fallen to his death from a police headquarters window. Did he fall accidentally, or was there foul play? The police try to cover it up, but a certified maniac with a flair for impersonation is tasked to conduct the interrogation. Who should take the blame? Time is running out, the public wants answers.

Bringing this show to life is Aarne Neeme, a freelance director who has frequently been engaged for theatre as well as television work. A faculty member of ITI, he was previously awarded a Member of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his significant service to the performing arts as a director and educator in theatre and television.

“To me, Accidental Death of an Anarchist is a madcap farce with a disturbing underbelly,” says Neeme. “Fo describes his play as “a grotesque farce about a tragic farce”, raising broader questions about the misuse of authority and power clothed in comedy and the confusions of identity. The actors are presented with the challenge of tackling these questions and unravelling the multiple tenets of farces in this play.”

Starring Aaron Kaiser Garcia, Kewal Kartik, Lin Jiarui, Marvin Acero Ablao, Sandeep Yadav, and Sonu Pilania, watch as this absurd, complex tale reveals more and more over the course of the performance, as these graduates show off all they’ve learnt and unravel the Accidental Death of an Anarchist.

Accidental Death of an Anarchist runs from 11th to 13th November 2021 at the Esplanade Theatre Studio. Tickets available here
