Leading actress Hong Huifang has won Best Actress for AJOOMMA at the 8th Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles. This is the first film award for Hong Huifang in her almost 40 years of acting career. The award was announced at the closing ceremony held on 18 November, Friday evening in Los Angeles.
“I am very happy for this Best Actress award from the Asian World Film Festival in Los Angeles! I would like to thank the jury members for the recognition. I’m especially grateful to the AJOOMMA team, family and friends in Singapore for their unwavering support throughout this amazing movie journey. I love you guys!” said Hong Huifang. Chinese actress Zhou Dongyu 周冬雨 won the same award in 2020 for her leading role in BETTER DAYS 《少年的你》.
AJOOMMA held its US Premiere on 10 November at the same festival, which ran from 9 – 18 November this year. The director He Shuming attended the festival in person where the film screenings were warmly received stateside. In Singapore, the movie collected SGD $550,000 at the Singapore box office as of 18 November.
Both Hong Huifang and Director He Shuming 何书铭 arrived in Taipei earlier this week and participated in various activities for the Golden Horse Film Festival. It received 4 nominations at the 59th Golden Horse Awards 第59届金马奖 including Best Leading Actress最佳女主角 (Hong Huifang), Best Supporting Actor最佳男配角 (Jung Dong-hwan 郑东焕), Best New Director最佳新导演 (He Shuming) and Best Original Screenplay最佳原著剧本 (He Shuming and Kris Ong 王欣茹). Results will be announced and presented at the star-studded event tonight at the Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall. The film opens in Taiwan on 23 December later this year.
Produced by award-winning filmmaker Anthony Chen 陈哲艺, AJOOMMA is the directorial debut of He Shuming, marking Hong Hui Fang’s first leading role in a feature film where she co-stars with talented Korean actors including Jung Dong-hwan, Kang Hyung-suk 姜亨锡 with special appearances by Yeo Jin-goo 吕珍九. Local actor Shane Pow包勋评 also plays a supporting role in the film. The movie is also selected as Singapore’s Oscars entry in the Best International Feature Film category.
