Preview: Doubt – A Parable by Pangdemonium!

After an acclaimed run of People, Places & Things in March, Pangdemonium is now ready to present its second production of 2023 – John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt: A Parable, a thought-provoking play that explores themes of morality, faith, and power.

Set in the 1960s, the play follows Sister Aloysius, a strict and conservative nun. She becomes suspicious of Father Flynn, the charismatic and progressive new priest at her school, who appears to be taking an unhealthy interest in one of the students. As she investigates his actions and motives, she must confront her own beliefs and biases.

“We are thrilled to be bringing the winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for Best Play, Doubt: A Parable, to Singapore audiences,” said Timothy Koh, Associate Director of Pangdemonium, “The play is a masterpiece of modern theatre, and we believe it will resonate with audiences of all backgrounds and beliefs.”

Doubt: A Parable was previously adapted into a 2008 Oscar-nominated film starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Powerful and shattering, its themes feel more relevant and urgent than ever for its timely exploration of truth in a world of misinformation.

Doubt: A Parable will once again be staged at the Singtel Waterfront Theatre at the Esplanade, and this time, adopt an in the round format, where the close proximity allows the audience to engage intensely with the action of the play; leaving everyone open and exposed. In some ways, this is evocative of a gladiator ring – that brings renewed focus to the battles our characters are waging below them. The scene is set for a battle of wills, and it will leave audiences to question their perceptions of truth and justice.

Written by John Patrick Shanley and directed by Timothy Koh, Doubt: A Parable stars veteran actress Neo Swee Lin as Sister Aloysius, leading an ensemble that includes Jason Godfrey as Father Flynn, Ching Shu Yi as Sister James, and Sharon Frese as Mrs. Muller.

Doubt plays from 2nd to 18th June 2023 at the Singtel Waterfront Theatre, Esplanade. Tickets available here
