Preview: Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Pangdemonium!

This June, one of theatre’s greatest tour de forces comes to life, with Pangdemonium! presenting Edward Albee’s magnum opus – Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Directed by Timothy Koh, the play has been studied by literature students around the world (including for the local A level syllabus) and has entranced audiences around the world with its riveting blend of tension, rapid fire wordplay, and unrelenting hard truths lurking just beneath the surface of every relationship.

Middle-aged and unhappily married, George and Martha stagger home from a late-night party, their world a blur of disillusionment and inebriation. The night takes an unexpected turn when a young and vibrant couple, Nick and Honey, burst onto the scene, bringing with them a whirlwind of youthful exuberance and new beginnings. In a labyrinth of dangerous mind games and reckless antics, fuelled by drinks and spite, the stark contrast between the jaded hosts and their vivacious guests reveals bitter rivalries and long-buried secrets.

First staged in 1962, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? isn’t just witty wordplay – it’s a visceral exploration of the human psyche, part dark comedy, and part love story, laying bare the primal capacity to hurt those we hold dearest. This enduring classic skilfully blends sharp wit, biting humour, and tragic underpinnings, offering a raw and unfiltered look at the complexities of the human psyche. Starring Daniel Jenkins and Pinky Amador as George and Martha, the veteran performers are joined by Salif Hardie and Ching Shu Yi as Nick and Honey. Prepare to be swept away by the drama, as Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is set to take Singapore by storm this June.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? plays from 7th to 23rd June 2024 at KC Arts Centre. Tickets available here
