Broadway runaway hit Hamilton was met with massive anticipation when it was announced to come to Singapore last year, and the hype was well-deserved, receiving rave reviews and acclaim from audiences, owing to its catchy songs, spectacular performances, and being an all-around spectacle of a production.
Hamilton briefly follows the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton, based on the biography by Ron Chernow. If you haven’t heard much about him, it’s because much of his story is overshadowed by the other more prominent founding fathers, and besides, in Singapore, American history isn’t widely studied or known. It may sound daunting then, to sit in for a full-length musical about this man’s life.

But rest assured, in the hands of creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hamilton is no social studies textbook, but an incredibly human story of a brilliant, proud man and politician, yet fallible and all-too-human, as he clashes with political rivals, and finds drama in his own family life. With its enduring themes of ambition, legacy and passion, Hamilton has had a profound impact on culture, politics and education through its groundbreaking musical storytelling, showing that anything can make for a compelling show, if you give it the right treatment.
Completely sung-through from beginning to end, you can also expect a revolutionary blend of hip-hop, R&B, and traditional show tunes that have redefined theatre since it premiered. It’s no wonder the lyrics have been shared and immortalised on social media by diehard fans of the show, with songs like ‘My Shot’, ‘Satisfied’, ‘The Room Where It Happens’, and of course the iconic opening number ‘Alexander Hamilton’ – you will know his name and want to singalong to the soundtrack when you get home.

As much as most of American history was written and determined by white men, Hamilton also resists and redefines that with its intentionally diverse cast, telling the story of America’s past through the lens of America’s present. One of its key themes is inclusivity and representation, bringing a rich tapestry of voices to life on stage, where the story of American is further made powerful through how it considers the parallels to immigrants stories, as seen through a modern post-colonial lens.
All of that adds up to award-winning excellence, having won an impressive 11 Tony Awards (including Best Musical), a Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, and the prestigious Pulitzer Prize in Drama. The show is a masterpiece that both critics and audiences have highly praised the world over. In addition, you can look forward to a cast that brings unparalleled energy, charisma, and talent to the stage every single night, each actor a professional in their own right that brings these characters to life – one must experience it live to witness Jason Arrow’s fiery presence as Alexander Hamilton to DeAundre’ Woods’ magnetic Aaron Burr, to Rachelle Ann Go’s turn as Eliza Hamilton, each performance is infused with depth and passion that you won’t want to miss out on.

If you haven’t caught it yet, it’s time to book your tickets, because the production must close on Sunday, 9th June, making this its final weekend in Singapore! It’s the global cultural phenomenon you don’t want to miss out on, and when you watch it, you’ll fully understand why the world has fallen in love with Alexander Hamilton, and join the community of fans who have been captivated by the production. Be in the room where it happens to see the musical that has taken the world by storm.
