Back in 2018, new theatre company Autopoetics, founded by Chelsea Crothers, Laura Hayes and Maiya Murphy, made their professional stage debut as a company with original script Provenance, showing off core tents of what the company stood for – rich visuals, a tight script, and powerful physical theatre.
Six years on, and the company are back with another new work, this time focusing on the ideas of social media’s thrall, in no there there. Considering how idealists, entrepreneurs, and fraudsters alike dress themselves for the job they want, not the job they have, no there there then wonders about the masks we put on as a way of manifesting dreams into reality. We follow Charlie, a girl caught between two worlds: a tiny hospital room and a huge galaxy of self-help and internet inspiration. Enticed by internet influencers and idols, Charlie invents an Instagram character – Cha Cha – who becomes a star by merely pretending that she already is one.
Joined by industry veteran Nora Samosir and newcomer Natalie Linn Titus, no there there then wonders how much Cha Cha can help Charlie, as Autopoetics brings the internet to life to help Charlie ask, who can really teach her how to set herself free? Watch as Autopoetics once again take to the stage to explore this fiercely modern theme and concept of Internet personas, and continue to make meaning in the relationship between the performer and you, the spectator.
no there there plays from 13th to 15th June 2024 at the NAFA Studio Theatre. Tickets available from Peatix
