Preview: Hedda Gabler by The Winter Players

Following their sold-out debut with Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, emerging theatre collective The Winter Players (TWP) is taking to the stage next January with their sophomore production, Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler at the KC Arts Centre. In line with their Company-in-Residence tenure at Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT), TWP’s selection for SRT’s Resident Company Programme is a significant milestone for this young collective, whose mission is to share their love of classic works with Singapore audiences by exploring, resurrecting, and reinventing international dramatic literature.

“Investing in the next generation has always been a cornerstone of our work,” said Charlotte Nors, Managing Director of SRT. “As a forward-looking theatre company, we felt compelled to step up our support for local theatre and ensure our succession planning was deliberate and strategic. In 2022 we launched our Resident Company programme, which is based on mentorship, space sponsorship and development of young theatre companies and collectives.”

TWP are deeply honoured to begin this tenure as Company-in-Residence with SRT. This opportunity, made possible through SRT’s support and mentorship, is regarded as a meaningful endorsement of the collective’s work. It reflects a commitment to fostering creative exploration and encouraging ambitious, innovative projects. Under SRT’s guidance, TWP seeks to expand their capabilities and solidify their place as the next generation of theatre makers in Singapore.

TWP’s staging of Hedda Gabler takes on Patrick Marber’s (Dealer’s Choice, Closer) modern adaptation, which was first staged at the National Theatre in London in 2016. Widely considered one of Henrik Ibsen’s masterpieces, the play follows the titular Hedda Gabler, the daughter of a general, who is trapped in a marriage and a house that she does not want, leading to her wanting to manipulate human lives for her own amusement and as an escape.

TWP’s staging will star Genevieve Tan (Secondary The Musical) as the titular Hedda Gabler, alongside Marwyn Ho as Tesman, Miriam Cheong as Juliana, Wong Shao Qi as Berte, Feroz J. Malik as Brack, Aaron Ee as Lovborg, and Kyra Lefebvre as Mrs. Elvsted. Don’t miss this chance to catch TWP in action and start the year off with this Norwegian classic, as they present Hedda Gabler.

Hedda Gabler plays from 17th to 19th January 2025 at KC Arts Centre. Tickets available from BookMyShow
