Preview: Saree, These Are Just Jokes! by Sharul Channa

Stand-up comedy isn’t for the faint of heart, or the slow of wit. And if there’s anyone who has proven she has both the guts and the timing to thrive, it’s Sharul Channa. Just ask Harper’s Bazaar, which praised her fearless presence on stage, or Prestige Singapore, which called her success in the male-dominated comedy world proof that women are, in fact, very funny.

She’s worn the saree. She’s broken the rules. She’s told the jokes anyway. Now, Sharul is taking things one bold step further with her brand-new stand-up special, Saree, These Are Just Jokes!, a title that perfectly captures her signature mix of cultural sharpness and playful rebellion. Premiering in Singapore before heading out on her largest India tour yet, the special marks a major milestone: 15 years of Sharul doing what she does best; telling the truth, loudly, hilariously, and on her own terms.

In this latest hour, Sharul returns with fresh stories and bigger laughs, turning her razor-sharp lens on modern life. Social expectations, self-imposed pressure, relationships, reinvention, and the beautiful chaos of knowing exactly what you should do… and doing the opposite. Her humour is incisive without being cruel, clever without trying too hard, and refreshingly honest without ever feeling heavy. One moment you’re laughing at a throwaway line, the next you’re nodding in recognition. Come for the jokes, stay for the cathartic release.

The 2026 run kicks off with a Singapore premiere at MDLR, before heading across India for a multi-city tour spanning Coimbatore, Chennai, Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara, and Hyderabad. This is Sharul’s victory lap, and a celebration of longevity in an industry that doesn’t always make space for women who are outspoken, brown, and unapologetically themselves.

Adding another layer to the tour is Sharul’s wardrobe partnership with Indian saree brand Suta. Known for celebrating softness and strength in equal measure, the collaboration turns the saree into a statement. Blending fashion, culture, and comedy, the partnership is a creative bridge between India and Singapore, and a meaningful step in Sharul’s evolving relationship with her roots.

Born in India and raised in Singapore, Sharul trained in theatre at LASALLE College of the Arts before carving out a singular voice in stand-up. From character-driven solo shows like Potty Mouth and Disco Sheela & Other Indian Superwomen to sold-out tours across Asia, Australia, and India, her rise has been anything but accidental.

Her recent years have been especially meteoric, with back-to-back India tours, international dates, and critically acclaimed work that blends comedy with social commentary. Offstage, she’s just as intentional—using her platform to spotlight home-grown Singaporean brands, collaborate with women’s rights organisations like AWARE, and push conversations around gender, race, and identity into the mainstream.

At its core, Saree, These Are Just Jokes! is a reminder of why Sharul Channa matters. She doesn’t just tell jokes, but entire stories that make space for complexity, contradiction, and joy. Fifteen years in, she’s still evolving, still challenging expectations, and still proving that comedy can be smart, stylish, and subversive all at once.

Saree, These Are Just Jokes! promises to be unapologetically fun, effortlessly sharp, and absolutely not to be missed.

Saree, These Are Just Jokes! plays on 5th and 6th March 2026 at MDLR. Tickets available here
