The Necessary Stage celebrates its 30th anniversary with a restaging of one their best-loved plays: Those Who Can’t, Teach!
First staged in 1990 and later on in 2010 to full houses, Those Who Can’t, Teach is a modern Singaporean theatre classic by TNS artistic director Alvin Tan and resident playwright Haresh Sharma. TWCT touches on an issue every Singaporean is familiar with: education.
Set in a secondary school, the play splits its time between teachers and students’ madcap lives and the daily struggles, often with surprisingly hilarious results. As the teachers attempt to educate, the students, being students, naturally are in opposition. And then of course, there’s the most difficult challenge of all – parents.
This edition of TWCT will feature an all star ensemble cast including Ghafir Akbar, Joshua Lim, Karen Tan, Lian Sutton and Siti Khalijah Zainal. From upskirting to texting, teaching to the politics of teaching, the education system is rife with danger and a whole lot of mayhem. Join this unforgettable cast of characters as they struggle to prove that Those Who CAN, Teach.
Those Who Can’t Teach plays at the National Library Drama Centre from 9-19 March 2017. Tickets available from SISTIC.
