Best known as being the all time leading points scorer in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Ben Gollings has been announced as an ambassador for the 2018 HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens, alongside DJ Forbes.

Said Ben on why he took up the position of ambassador: “It’s a real honour, and it’s my way of giving back to the sport and contributing in a different way. There’s a responsibility to keeping the sport alive and inspire more people to come and watch.”

At the height of his career, Gollings was one of the giants of the sport and a key player in shining a spotlight on Rugby Sevens, welcoming in a new era of global popularity as an Olympic sport. Seven years on, Gollings still continues to hold the World Rugby Sevens Series record for most points scored, with 2,652 points over 344 matches, 70 tournaments and 220 tries. It’s no wonder then that he’s been chosen an an ambassador, having helped prepare both the Singapore men’s and women’s sevens sides for the 2017 SEA Games, where both teams came away with silver medals.

Ben remains incredibly positive about the sport, believing that teams are only getting better with each successive year. Interestingly enough, over the last two years, the Singapore Sports Awards’ International Sports Event of the Year has seen a different winner each time, with Kenya taking the title at the inaugural tournament in 2016, before being succeeded by Canada in a heart-stopping finale in 2017. Said Ben on the competition remaining fierce: “Teams are vigorously learning from their weaknesses and really putting a lot of effort into understanding how other of the nations participating in the Sevens work. There’s been an increased focus on players to break enemy lines of defence, and so much tactical analysis involved. Results in the Sevens are unpredictable, with every team improving. Singapore can go even further if they keep playing and get more experience.”

Said Ben on why people should come down to this year’s edition: “the Rugby 7s isn’t just for fans; it’s for the entire family, regardless of age, and hopefully, fans will bring the whole household along for a fun family day out together.”

Expect an adrenaline fuelled weekend as you come down to spectate and cheer on your favourite teams at the third edition of HSBC’s Rugby World 7s in Singapore.
