LONDON – As part of the Clapham Fringe 2018, Pregnant Fish Theatre premieres Like Lions, a brand new play about the everyday struggles of UK millennials this October.

Over the last year, Pregnant Fish Theatre conducted a series of workshops with 25 – 34 year-olds around the UK, giving participants opportunities to discuss their hopes, fears and thoughts about their own futures. With the input gathered, director of Pregnant Fish Theatre and Lecturer at The University of East London Tom Drayton has then developed it into Like Lions.

On developing this production, Tom says: ‘There’s a tendency for millennials to be labelled as lazy or self-obsessed – or told that they could all buy a house if they stopped buying so many avocados! We wanted to hear from a range of young people around the UK to see what they thought about the situation they find themselves in. From 0-hour contracts, to Instagram to Brexit – what impact do all these things have on people trying to make a start in their lives?’

The play itself follows twins Jacob and Sam as they head off to university, seemingly the only viable option at the time. Jacob decides to quit after the first year to ‘find himself’, only to end up trapped in a chain of 0-hour contracts, while Sam sticks it out, yet finds herself trapped in the same position even after graduating.

But then Sam attends her first protest in London, and new hope seems to arrive in the form of Occupy and Momentum. Is this the solution to all this mess? Meanwhile Jacob, intent on unravelling the mysteries of the universe, might just have stumbled upon the meaning of life itself.

Promising an intimate and authentic look at the complexities and crises surrounding the millennial generation, from rent prices to Brexit to Instagram, Like Lions blends real accounts and storytelling to portray this generation’s story in a brand new way. Utilising Pregnant Fish Theatre’s signature lo-fi, intimate theatre that achieves ‘precisely what theatre should try to be’, watch our two twins as they navigate their way through the chaos of life over a decade, from the financial collapse of 2008 to the current pre-Brexit negotiations, and their paths diverge completely from each other.

Like Lions plays from 12th to 14th October 2018 as part of the Clapham Fringe 2018 at The Bread and Roses Theatre, 68 Clapham Manor Street, SW4 6DZ, London. Tickets available here For the full line-up of shows, visit their website here
