National Museum of Singapore Celebrates 131st Anniversary with Weekend of Fun Activities

Way back on a fateful Wednesday, specifically, 12th October 1887 at 5pm, the 14th Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir Frederick Weld, ceremoniously opened the Raffles Library and Museum at Stamford Road.

What was once a humble effort to spur intellectual inquiry in the region has since grown into a massive institution, outliving the Japanese Occupation and transforming into a sociohistory and cultural institution beloved by many, and better known as the National Museum of Singapore.

The oldest of its kind in Singapore, it continues to excite and inspire visitors with its innovative ways of presenting history and the national collection, with countless activities and exhibitions launched every year. To commemorate its 131st anniversary, the museum invites YOU to celebrate with them with an entire weekend’s worth of activities to take part in!

Besides exploring the usual galleries, visitors can rediscover the grounds as the organisers activate the space with exciting activities and “dialogues” with the artefacts through engaging theatrical acts. Guests can also enjoy live music performances from artists such as Piano Minion and Boon Lay Garden Primary School, building tours, craft activities, food and more as you reacquaint yourself with the National Museum of Singapore. For the kids, author Linda Locke will be conducting a reading of her children’s book, Agnes and Her Amazing Orchid, accompanied by live sketching by the book’s illustrator Muhd Nor, where audiences can learn all about how the Vanda Miss Joaquim became Singapore’s national flower and even take part in a colouring competition!

Guests can also enjoy roaming the grounds and exploring the many food options available, including food trucks, and even free Cedele cupcakes when they participate in the museum’s activities, taking them on a trail through time as they collect stickers and fill up a “time traveller’s log sheet”. Tenants Food For Thought and Janice Wong will even be preparing special themed menus and desserts to match the ongoing Magic and Menace exhibition happening upstairs at the museum!

Come join the National Museum this weekend as they celebrate 131 years of history – their own history, and support them as they continue to remain one of Singapore’s most renowned and important institutions dedicated to the preservation and archival of our life and times.

National Museum of Singapore – 131st Anniversary Celebrations takes place at the National Museum of Singapore on 13th & 14th October 2018 from 11am to 5pm. Admission is free, but selected programmes are ticketed. For more information, visit the National Museum website here
