WTA Finals 2018: Peripheral Activities Galore As The Finals Hit Town

As the fifth and final BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global arrives to our shores once again this week, Singapore is set to be gripped by tennis fever islandwide as the Singapore Sports Hub comes alive with the matches, arrival of women’s tennis’ biggest and brightest stars, and plenty of action for the fans at the WTA Finals Fan Village, incorporating the Singapore Tennis Festival once again.

At the same time, visitors and guests can look forward to the 10-day Courtside by the Bay festival happening in the very heart of the city at Marina Bay Promenade, with a delectable lineup of tennis-themed activities, entertainment, F&B stalls, and official WTA Finals events, including appearances by both players and legends and the Official Doubles Draw Ceremony on 23rd October.

Activities at Courtside by the Bay range from tennis-themed activities such as a special photo exhibition celebrating the legacy of the WTA Finals Singapore, along with a free concert on 20th October 20 as part of the Marina Bay Sands’ concert series, Open Stage, which showcases home-grown and regional music acts. Beyond Courtside by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands will also be welcoming the players to stay at the iconic hotel, as well as host the black-tie Gala Evening featuring the Official Singles Draw as always.

Says Ms Jean Ng, Director, Sports, Singapore Tourism Board: “The WTA Finals Singapore experience for fans extends far beyond centre court into the heart of the Lion City itself. With complementary initiatives like Courtside by the Bay, we are confident that visitors would be inspired to discover Singapore’s wide range of lifestyle offerings, and to deepen and share their passions.”

In addition, at Singapore Sports Hub itself, fans can get even more out of the action as they once again feature the Singapore Tennis Festival (STF). Introduced by Sport Singapore in 2017 to inspire more recreational and competitive participation in tennis, the festival will run from 20th to 28th October, where visitors can participate in tennis challenges, immerse in an augmented reality e-gaming experience, shop at a local artisan street market, and enjoy dance and musical performances. Fans can also purchase tickets to catch multi-Grammy Award winning artist Jason Mraz perform at the National Stadium, marking his only stop in Asia for his tour this year.

Says Mr Lai Chin Kwang, Chief of ActiveSG, Sport Singapore: “The WTA Finals has been the catalyst for many community projects and initiatives like the ActiveSG Tennis Academy, SportCares “Love Singapore” and Singapore Tennis Festival, with the belief that tennis is for everyone. October has become synonymous with Tennis in our local sporting calendar. This year we will continue to offer more fun and tennis to our people. We are working with our partners to make sport part of everyone’s lifestyle.”

Says Sarah Clements, Vice President, Tennis – Asia, Lagardère Sports: “When we brought the WTA Finals to Singapore, we wanted to turn the tournament into a world-class sporting, lifestyle and entertainment festival. Over the past five years, we’ve worked with the Singapore Tourism Board and all our partners to ensure that we take the festival atmosphere to the community across the island. From Suntec City, to CHIJMES and now Marina Bay Sands, we’ve created a downtown festival proposition that will excite tennis and casual fans alike with plenty of magical and Instagram-worthy moments. With player and legend visits, tennis-themed activities, F&B, music and entertainment and even match screenings, Courtside by the Bay will provide a fully immersive and engaging experience to augment what’s offered on court”.
