Resound Collective, Singapore’s first professional chamber ensemble, has announced the launch of a new string quartet – the Concordia Quartet. Comprising four prize-winning musicians – Edward Tan, Kim Kyu Ri, Matthias Östringer and Theophilus Tan, the quartet will be making their debut on Saturday, 1st February at the new Ngee Ann Kongsi Theatre @ W!ld Rice.
Widely regarded as the pinnacle of Western chamber music, the intimacy, versatility and brilliance of the string quartet form has captivated audiences and captured the imagination of the greatest composers and musicians over centuries. Condordia Quartet is only the second full-time professional string quartet formed in Singapore, following in the footsteps of T’ang Quartet, which formed in 1992. Two musicians from the quartet, Kim Kyu Ri and Theophilus Tan are recent graduates of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, and were coached by the T’ang Quartet during their time in the conservatory.
Over the course of the evening, the quartet will share three great masterpieces from the string quartet repertoire, opening with Haydn’s “Sunrise” Quartet, composed when Haydn had already mastered the genre which he had introduced to the musical world. Also on the programme is Schubert’s Quartettsatz, the single movement for a string quartet that was never completed, yet fully satisfying. Finally Concordia Quartet will bring you the String Quartet no. 1, a work that heralds three great periods of string quartet writing that was to come from Beethoven.
Says violinist Edward Tan: “It is a great privilege for me to work with Kyu Ri, Matthias and Theophilus, who like me have decided to spend the next chapter of our musical careers performing as a quartet. It takes huge commitment and dedication for a quartet to succeed, but we’re all very excited about the journey ahead of us.”
In addition to presenting public string quartet concerts, the quartet will also focus on outreach, to schools and to the community. “The size and flexibility of the string quartet makes it an ideal vehicle for outreach and audience development. We are very pleased that these four wonderful musicians have decided to come together to create the quartet, that we expect will add much to the chamber music scene in Singapore,” said Mervin Beng, Chairman of Resound Collective, which organises and supports the Concordia Quartet.
Following their debut in February, the Concordia Quartet will also be featured in W!ld Rice’s restaging of The Importance of Being Earnest from 7th February to 8th March 2020.
