The last time we watched The Opera People was in March, prior to the COVID-19 lockdown. But not even a pandemic can stop the arts, as they’re back, this time with the first ever film opera made in Singapore and the Singapore premiere of Mozart’s Idomeneo.

In the film, watch as the spirits of five characters gather in an empty theatre, drawn to a ghost light. In a world in which the show cannot go on, they take it upon themselves to bring to relive the story of Mozart’s Idomeneo, where a desperate father makes an unspeakable vow to save himself from ruin, only to find out that he must make the ultimate sacrifice to fulfil his promise, destroying the lives of those he loves in the process.

An unparalleled exploration of the relationship between power, duty and love, this new adaptation of Idomeneo is directed by Edith Podesta, with music direction by Lien Boon Hua and features some of Singapore’s finest singers including Jonathan Charles Tay as Idomeneo, Felicia Teo Kaixin as Idamante, Joyce Lee Tung as Elettra, Teng Xiang Ting as Illia, Leslie Tay as Arbace, accompanied by Beatrice Lin on the piano.

With one of The Opera People’s main aims being to create more specifically digital content and bring opera to the online realm in a more organic way, the pandemic has allowed them the opportunity to do just that, developing their approach and creative process in presenting operas. Don’t miss this chance to see The Opera People explore the filmic world, and breathe new life into one of Mozart’s masterpieces as Idomeneo Refracted premieres this November.

Idomeneo Refracted is available on SISTIC Live from 6th to 30th November 2020, with tickets available from SISTIC
