Preview: 晚安你好 (Wan An Ni Hao) – The Late Night Show with Xiao Ming by Impromptu Meetings

If you studied Chinese back in school, you’d likely have used the name Xiao Ming in most of your compositions as a generic character with an easy to write name. Now, watch your childhood comes to life, as Impromptu Meetings (IM) brings you 晚安你好 (Wan An Ni Hao) – The Late Night Show with Xiao Ming this January.

Formed by theatre practitioners Miriam Cheong, Cheryl Tan Yun Xin and Adeeb Fazah, IM was formally banded together this year after 2019’s The Chronicles of Xiao Ming, an autobiographical solo performance, at the Lasalle College of the Arts Solo Fest 2019. The show was then further incubated and presented in Centre 42 under the Guest Room programme.

With The Late Night Show with Xiao Ming, that initial idea has now gone digital, as it takes the form of a satirical web show exposing the quirks of Singapore’s education system through one person’s tumultuous journey with the Chinese syllabus. Held on Zoom, viewers will get a chance to meet IM’s resident Xiao Ming, Miriam Cheong. Miriam will recount her experience, in between humorous sketches and interactive games taking a lead from variety television shows, with the hopes that viewers will gain an understanding into the ways that a rigorous education system that prizes good grades and good schools will shape an individual’s self-worth.

“With our digital spin-off version of Xiao Ming, we hope to offer some lightness to what has been a stupid year. We hope that the show will be a place of respite for anyone else who is shamed for something they are just not good at, or just anyone going through a tough time,” says performer Miriam Cheong.

晚安你好 (Wan An Ni Hao): The Late Night Show with Xiao Ming runs from 8th to 10th January 2021 online. Register for free on this link
