Preview: Session Zero by Checkpoint Theatre

The term ‘Session Zero’ is probably an unfamiliar one, unless you play tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons. The phrase refers to the first meeting between a game master and their players, meeting for the first time and establishing the rules of play for the campaign they’re about to embark on. It’s a ritual of trust, lays down the groundwork, and deciding on how things will move going forward.

Taking that term as its title, Checkpoint Theatre will be presenting their first live show this year based around that concept in December, at 42 Waterloo. Written by Jo Tan and directed by Huzir Sulaiman, Session Zero follows an estranged couple (Jo and Brendon Fernandez) as they attempt to make one last attempt to save their marriage. Could the solution lie in Dungeons & Dragons?

With the syllables of the forgotten language that they once shared now echoing through their lives, they must rediscover the words that brought them together in the first place. Watch as they embark on what could be the final journey of their life together, and decide if the premise of their relationship is a game or a competition, in this portrait of the struggles in relationships that are often whispered about, but hardly ever brought out into the light.

Session Zero plays from 2nd to 19th December 2021 at 42 Waterloo. Tickets available from Peatix
