KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA – Liver & Lung, the celebrated production company behind the award-winning Sepet The Musical, announces a thrilling digital release of their latest production, Melur The Musical.

For Halloween, they are streaming a recorded performance of the first act of the show and are launching its soundtrack on Spotify. Audiences can stream the production now at cloudjoi.com for a fee of RM65 only. They can also visit the link to listen to the soundtrack on Spotify for free.

Melur The Musical premiered earlier this year in February, selling out at the Petaling Jaya Performing Arts Center in Bandar Utama. It was received with wide-spread critical acclaim.

Set in colonial Malaya, during the Malayan Emergency, Melur The Musical depicts the spell-binding story of two women, Melur and Cempaka, as they navigate British rule. Things take a cruel turn when Cempaka’s husband, the British High Commissioner, commits a murderous crime and the characters experience the wrath of a supernatural creature, now a blood thirsty Pontianak determined for revenge.

Tria Aziz, three-time BOH Cameronian recipient, plays the titular role of Melur. Known for her vocal chops, Tria has won multiple Best Actress awards for her work in various Malaysian musical productions.

Recognised for their innovative storytelling style, Liver & Lung has brought together an extraordinary cast, captivating music, and an important story to present Melur The Musical digitally, so that you can enjoy it from the comfort of your own home.

“I had been working on Melur The Musical for six years. It’s an enchanting, spectacular blend of romance, horror, tragedy and politics. The musical kept audiences on the edge of their seats this February and I am so happy to be showcasing the musical digitally so you can watch it if you missed it.” remarks Shafeeq Shajahan, Liver & Lung’s co-founder and the musical’s director.

“With long, jet black hair and sharp nails, the Pontianak is not the vibrant, pregnant woman she once was. Instead, she is a demonic force of nature that forces us to challenge societal notions of femininity and motherhood,” Shafeeq adds. “My mother told me the story of the Pontianak and in many ways this musical is dedicated to her and all of the South East Asian stories she brought me up with.”

The musical combines traditional Malay folk songs and horror influences across generations, capturing the Malaysian cultural spirit with hauntingly beautiful melodies. The score was composed by Shafeeq himself, alongside Cypriot-composer Vasilis Konstantinides and Badrish. The musical was arranged and musically directed by Irena Taib, from The Impatient Sisters fame.
