Tenth anniversaries are hard to come by, and for an independent fair like the Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF), their milestone 10th edition is certainly something worth celebrating. Once again gathering a tightly-curated selection of the world’s most interesting independent publishers, a total of 104 local and international exhibitors will be showcasing a wide selection of artists’ books, zines, monographs, contemporary art editions, and other printed ephemera for visitors to peruse.
Not only does the 10th edition signify consistency and quality, but also an evolution over the last decade, as the fair continues to cement its position as the leading and largest Art Book Fair in Southeast Asia. This year, the fair will host a number of major Art Book Fair organisers around the world including Printed Matter (USA), organisers of the New York & Los Angeles Art Book Fairs, Tokyo Art Book Fair (Japan), and abC art book in China as Exhibitors for the first time.
Joining them as notable international Exhibitors are Set Margins’ Publications (The Netherlands), photobook publishers Perimeter Editions (Australia), design and printing studio Corners (South Korea), bookmakers Tara Books (India) and REDFOXPRESS & ANTIC-HAM (Ireland) amongst many others. First time local Exhibitors include TRI.PART.ITE, 0rbit, Other People’s Books, and Made by Beverley, while SGABF stalwarts returning for the 10th consecutive edition are Atelier HOKO, Holycrap, Grey Projects and The Institute of Critical Zoologists.
Alongside these noteworthy international contributors, the fair continues its support of independent artist/student-run collectives in the exploration of the zine/art book medium. This edition of SGABF will pilot the Artist Support Table, a financial support scheme offering eligible artists and students a booth at a lower fee with the aim of cultivating an accessible environment for the artbook as a medium. Some featured artist-exhibitors under the Artist Support Table are first-time exhibitors, PEER (Singapore) and A Very Normal Collective (Singapore). Returning exhibitors include artist-zine project EXTRA CREDIT (USA/South Korea), and local artist-duo radioriotgrrrl (Singapore).
The festivities will extend beyond the Singapore Art Museum this year, and expand into Tanjong Pagar Distripark’s Blk 37 Carpark Spine to host a selection of F&B vendors and pop-ups such as MahaCo’s taco food truck, an ice cream cart, and Coffee Break. Parked outdoors all through the fair will also be a walk-in Zine Truck — a stationary lorry converted into a shop operated by SHRUB, a local store specialising in independent artist products.
This year, SGABF will be producing a limited edition run of festival merchandise to mark its 10th Edition. Along with exclusive Festival T-shirts is a limited edition Cutting Mat designed by local design studio, Currency, and screen-printed by local print shop, Konstrukt Labs. SGABF2024 Festival T-shirts and Cutting Mats will be available for sale at the fair.
