Visual Art: Jeon Byeong Sam explores AI and Identity through his art at SAW 2026

Singapore Art Week 2026 is set to unfold across the city with its signature blend of global creativity and cultural dialogue, and one of its most anticipated highlights comes from Korean contemporary artist Jeon Byeong Sam, who will host two large-scale solo exhibitions across some of Singapore’s most iconic heritage landmarks.

Opening on January 22, 2026, Jeon’s dual exhibitions will take over Capitol Singapore and CHIJMES, transforming these historic spaces into immersive environments that explore identity, existence, and the infinite potential hidden within the finite.

Staging exhibitions simultaneously at Capitol Singapore and CHIJMES is no small feat. Both venues are deeply embedded in Singapore’s architectural and cultural history, making them fitting backdrops for Jeon’s work, which constantly negotiates between past and future, material and virtual, individual and collective. Known for his experimental practice that bridges sculpture, photography, and media art, Jeon uses repetition, layering, and transformation to ask a deceptively simple question: What does it mean to exist today?

Running for a full month at the Capitol Singapore Exhibition Hall, JEON BYEONG SAM: InterFace invites visitors into a world where human identity is deconstructed and rebuilt. The exhibition features 30 portraits of a diverse mix of global participants, including well-known Singaporean figures such as veteran actor Mark Lee and influencer Chiou Huey, alongside individuals of varying ages, professions, and nationalities. Several portraits are also created using AI tools, extending the concept of identity into the virtual realm.

Jeon’s signature “photo-sculpture” technique involves printing thousands of photographic fragments, which he then hand-folds and stacks through an intense, almost meditative process. The resulting three-dimensional forms erase recognizable facial features, leaving behind abstract objects that feel both personal and universal. In this space where individuality dissolves, viewers are encouraged to reflect on the interconnected networks of modern society—and the essence of existence that remains when surface identities fall away.

While InterFace unfolds indoors, Jeon’s second exhibition takes art into the open cityscape. Held for 10 nights at the CHIJMES Main Lawn, JEON BYEONG SAM: Rumination is a monumental media art project that uses projection mapping across the historic facade of CHIJMES Hall, a National Monument of Singapore.

Here, Jeon deconstructs the colors and geometric elements of national flags from around the world, dissolving familiar symbols into fluid, abstract visual movements. As borders blur and shapes merge, the projection becomes a visual meditation on coexistence, continuity, and shared humanity—transcending national and cultural boundaries. Against the architectural grandeur of CHIJMES, the work feels both monumental and quietly contemplative, inviting passersby to pause, look up, and reflect.

Jeon Byeong Sam has long centered his practice on the concept of the finite”; life, nations, ideologies, entities that have beginnings and ends. Through repetition and layering, he transforms these finite subjects into experiences that suggest infinity. This philosophy feels especially resonant in Singapore, a city defined by its diversity, precision, and constant motion.

“My work is a process of inducing infinite thought through finite matter,” Jeon explains. “In Singapore, where diverse cultures and values intersect, I want to pose a question about the very essence of our being.”

A pioneer of convergent art, Jeon brings an unusually interdisciplinary background to his work. He holds a B.F.A. in Sculpture from Hongik University, an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine—a rare combination that underpins his seamless integration of physical craft and digital thinking.

His international career includes exhibitions at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris and a high-profile collaboration with Lamborghini, cementing his presence on the global art stage. According to Young-been Oh, Exhibition Director of ARTBODA, the organizer behind the shows, “This monumental exhibition at Singapore’s symbolic landmarks offers a rare opportunity to experience both the universal values and the overwhelming aesthetics of contemporary art.”

Extending the experience beyond viewing, visitors are invited to participate in a special interactive badge-making workshop during Singapore Art Week. By submitting a photo of their face, participants receive a custom-designed badge inspired by Jeon’s signature MOMENT series—transforming their identity into a vibrant, striped artwork. It’s a playful yet thoughtful takeaway: a miniature reflection of Jeon’s artistic universe, and a reminder that art, like identity, is something we all help create.

As Singapore Art Week 2026 lights up the city, Jeon Byeong Sam’s dual exhibitions offer something rare: a chance to slow down, look closer, and reflect on what remains constant in a world defined by change.

JEON BYEONG SAM: InterFace runs from 22nd January to 22nd February 2026 at Capitol Singapore Exhibition Hall. JEON BYEONG SAM: Rumination runs from 22nd to 31st January 2026 at CHIJMES Main Lawn from 7pm-10pm.
