Music: Singapore Symphony appoints Andrew Beer as concertmaster

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has appointed violinist Andrew Beer as its GK Goh Concertmaster, starting from the 2026/27 season. A musician with an international career spanning major orchestras and musical genres, Beer will help shape the orchestra’s sound as it enters a new chapter with incoming Music Director Hannu Lintu.

Canadian violinist Andrew Beer joins the SSO from the Auckland Philharmonia, where he has served as concertmaster since 2014. Over the years, he has performed on leading stages and broadcasts across Europe, Asia, Australasia and the Americas.

Beer has appeared as guest concertmaster with orchestras including the Hallé; the City of Birmingham, Melbourne, Adelaide, Vancouver and New Zealand Symphony Orchestras; and Opera North. Alongside his orchestral work, he is an active chamber musician and a strong advocate for contemporary music. His wide-ranging musical interests also extend to tango — performing with the quintet Aotango — and world music.

Kenneth Kwok, CEO of the Singapore Symphony Group, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Andrew to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra after an extensive global search. We look forward to the artistry and leadership he will bring to the SSO as we begin our new season with incoming Music Director Hannu Lintu. Our sincere thanks also go to our Co-Principal Guest Concertmasters David Coucheron and Kevin Lin for their support during the interim period.”

Diana Weir, Chief Executive of the Auckland Philharmonia, reflected on Beer’s tenure: “Over his 12 years with the orchestra, Andrew has been a dedicated artistic leader and a strong advocate for both his colleagues and our artistic standards. He has given memorable solo performances, supported New Zealand composers and artists, and built warm relationships with audiences and the wider community. Ahead of his final performance with us in June, we look forward to celebrating Andrew and wish him every success in this exciting new role in Singapore.”

Beer said he is looking forward to the move. “I’m extremely excited and honoured to be joining the Singapore Symphony, a world-class orchestra in such a vibrant, multicultural city,” he said. “My heartfelt thanks go to the Auckland Philharmonia for 12 wonderful years of music-making and growth. I look forward to working with the SSO and contributing to its continued artistic journey in Singapore and beyond.”
