Film: Director and Cast of China’s Box Office hit DEAR YOU 《给阿嬷的情书》To Attend Singapore Gala Premiere at Marina Bay Sands

Singapore is set to host a special cinematic spotlight this June as the acclaimed Chinese-language film DEAR YOU《给阿嬷的情书》arrives with its creative team for a series of premiere events and cultural celebrations.

Presented by Clover Films and Golden Village, the Singapore leg of the film’s international rollout brings director Lan Hongchun together with lead actors Li Sitong and Wang Yantong. The trio will be in town on 17 June 2026 for a press conference followed by a gala premiere held at the iconic Sands Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.

The day is expected to unfold as a two-part experience. In the afternoon, members of the local media will engage with the visiting creative team during a dedicated press conference, offering insights into the film’s production journey and its unexpectedly strong international reception. Later that evening, the spotlight shifts to the red carpet at the gala premiere, where audiences will get a rare chance to see the director and cast appear in person and introduce the film on stage.

Since its release in mainland China on 30 April 2026, DEAR YOU has emerged as one of the year’s standout box office stories. Built around a largely non-professional ensemble cast, the film defied early expectations and built momentum through word-of-mouth, holding the top position at the China box office for more than five consecutive weeks. It has since grossed over RMB 1.7 billion, placing it among the highest-grossing Chinese films of 2026.

At its core, DEAR YOU is a cross-generational story shaped by memory, migration, and the fragile ways families stay connected across distance and time. Directed and co-written by Lan Hongchun, the narrative moves between two timelines: one following a grandson in the present day as he searches in Thailand for a long-lost grandfather, and another tracing a young newlywed in 1940s wartime China who journeys to Southeast Asia in search of work to support his family back home.

Threaded through both storylines is the historical practice of qiaopi (侨批)—letters and remittances sent by overseas Chinese migrants to their families. The film uses this cultural archive as an emotional bridge, revealing how love, obligation, and survival were carried across borders long before modern communication existed.

Beyond its storytelling, the film has also drawn attention for its cultural texture and linguistic authenticity. To celebrate this, Singapore audiences will be treated to a special programme of eight exclusive Teochew-language screenings at GVmax, GV VivoCity, running from 18 to 21 June 2026. These screenings present the film in its original dialect version, offering a rare opportunity to experience its emotional cadence and cultural nuance as intended.

The Teochew Appreciation Movie Showcase will be held exclusively at GVmax, GV VivoCity, with tickets priced at $18.50 for the public and $16.50 for Golden Village Movie Club members. Tickets to the Teochew screenings are already sold out.

Beyond the screenings and premiere, the film’s Singapore activities reflect a broader regional collaboration. The gala premiere is supported by event partners including BYD and DENZA, with One Tree Holdings serving as co-distributor in Singapore. The Official Partner is Marina Bay Sands.

Speaking ahead of the event, Clover Films’ Managing Director Mr Lim Teck highlighted the film’s resonance beyond its commercial performance, pointing to its themes of family ties, migration, and shared Southeast Asian heritage. He also noted that the Teochew-language screenings offer audiences a chance to connect more closely with the film’s original emotional and linguistic landscape.

With its blend of historical depth and contemporary storytelling, DEAR YOU continues its international journey in Singapore not just as a box office success, but as a cultural moment—one that brings audiences, creators, and communities together in a shared viewing experience.
