Film: DEAR YOU 《给阿嬷的情书》receives 70 more sessions in Teochew due to overwhelming demand

What began as a special celebration of Teochew heritage has quickly become one of Singapore’s most talked-about cinema events this year. Following overwhelming demand for the original Teochew-language screenings of Dear You, the Teochew Cultural Movie Showcase is expanding with 70 additional commercial screenings, giving even more audiences the opportunity to experience the acclaimed film in the dialect in which it was originally made.

Running from 3 to 12 July, the expanded showcase now spans nine cinemas across Singapore, with four new venues joining the line-up: GV Bugis+, GV Cineleisure, Shaw Lido and Shaw JEM. The original screening locations—GV VivoCity, GV Yishun, GV Bishan, GV Tampines and GV Jurong Point—remain part of the programme.

The expansion comes after the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) approved an additional 100 Teochew-language screenings, reflecting the remarkable response from audiences eager to watch the film in its original dialect.

For many Singaporeans, the appeal goes beyond subtitles. Hearing Teochew spoken on the big screen evokes memories of grandparents, family traditions and a dialect that has shaped generations of local Chinese households. It’s a rare opportunity to experience a contemporary blockbuster through the authentic rhythms and emotional nuances of the language in which it was created.

“The enthusiastic response to the Teochew-language screenings of Dear You has been truly heartening,” said Mr Lim Teck, Managing Director of Clover Films.

“We are pleased to expand the showcase with additional screenings across more cinemas to meet audience demand. Beyond commercial screenings, we will continue to partner with grassroots and community organisations to hold another 30 community screenings, bringing the film to more seniors. We hope the film continues to spark conversations across generations and encourages more people to embrace and preserve our culture.”

The community component remains a key part of the initiative. Alongside the commercial screenings, another 30 community screenings will be organised in partnership with grassroots and community organisations, allowing even more seniors to enjoy the film in their mother tongue.

Directed and co-written by Lan Hongchun and starring Li Sitong and Wang Yantong, Dear You tells an emotional story of family, sacrifice and the enduring legacy of qiaopi—the historical letters and remittances sent home by overseas Chinese migrants to their loved ones. The heartfelt drama has become one of China’s biggest surprise box office successes of 2026, grossing more than RMB1.8 billion while earning widespread critical acclaim.

As interest in dialect-language content continues to grow in Singapore, the expanding Teochew Cultural Movie Showcase demonstrates that audiences are not only eager for compelling stories, but also for authentic cultural experiences that reconnect them with their roots.

DEAR YOU 《给阿嬷的情书》is playing in Singapore cinemas such as Golden Village. Teochew screenings will take place from 3rd to 26th July 2026, with tickets for the additional screenings from 3rd to 12th July 2026 on sale from 12pm, 2 July 2026 (Thursday) via the Golden Village website and all GV cinemas.
