Cloud Gate 2 is the sister company of the renowned Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, and will finally make their Singaporean debut at the 2017 Huayi Chinese Festival of the arts! Founded by Lin Hwai-min and the late Lo Man-fei, Cloud Gate 2 has quickly grown to become one of Taiwan’s foremost junior contemporary dance companies featuring some of the country’s most talented up and coming dancers in original works by innovative young choreographers. This February, Cloud Gate 2 is set to dazzle audiences with polished skill and keen technique with three pieces by award-winning choreographers Cheng Tsung-lung and Huang Yi.
The triple bill will start off with Huang Yi’s Wicked Fish, described as “fast-paced, exciting and fluid” by Dance Europe, and features dancers effortlessly mimicking a shoal of fish in an enigmatic choreography of twists, turns and lifts. Next, The Wall, by the company’s artistic director, Cheng Tsung-lung, is a powerful exploration of protection and segregation, a dramatic march of contrasts that is both “sinuous and balletic” (The New York Times), with ever-changing, complex formations. The final piece Beckoning, also choreographed by Cheng, is a playful and poetic work inspired by the colourful street dancing rituals of Taoist temple parades.
Having made waves on their world tours and receiving critical acclaim for their performances, this is one dance event you won’t want to miss, celebrating and showcasing the vibrant energy of these gutsy young dancers and thrilling choreography.
Cloud Gate 2 – A Triple Bill plays at the Esplanade Theatre from 7-8 Feb as part of the 2017 Huayi Chinese Festival of the Arts. Tickets available here
