Thinking of having a quiet night in this weekend? Think again, as The Working Capitol returns with the 7th edition of the Urban Ventures Street Party this Saturday!
Themed ‘Express Yourself’, expect plenty of exciting programmes on the party schedule, which runs from 4pm all the way to 10.30pm. Previous editions have received praise for the sheer amount of fun guests have had, and below, we’ll be detailing just what you can expect from this Saturday’s party!
The entirety of Keong Saik Road will be transformed into the ultimate playground this Saturday, as Urban Ventures by LOPELAB (a ground-up place-making initiative) invites local talents and artists down to bring the party outdoors. At the party on Saturday, guests and performers will celebrate their individuality, and are highly encouraged to come dressed in their favourite outfits as they enjoy some of the best local bands, talented drag queens and performance poets.
Starting at 4pm, kickstart the party with local bands from the likes of ambient electronic band Midst or hypnotic shoegaze from Cosmic Child, before turning up the beat as the sun sets with DJ sets from soul and groove influenced international DJ Sivanesh for a grooving, body shaking time. It’s not just about bands though – if you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race, then you’d better get ready to lip sync for your life as drag queens descend upon the festivities and ham it up with glitz and glamour, with fiesty queens including Yeast Monster, Tiara, Lily Elle, Dahlia Rose and Arya Dunn. Finally, check out the many local performance poets situated along Wordsmithing Avenue, including Haiku expert Dave Tai and published poet Ang Shuang.
Meanwhile, shopaholics rejoice as there’ll be plenty of chances to engage in some much needed retail therapy at the Underground Market and Artisan Market which start at 5pm. With social media darlings Irina Tan, Valerie Wang and celebrity style guru Keith Png present at the Underground Market, while favourite labels such as The Plain Supplies and Pins and Pongs will throng the Artisan Market hawking handcrafted and bespoke pieces, you’ll be whipping out your wallet before long to indulge in all that the marketplace has to offer.
Even fitness lovers have a chance to have fun here, as there will be a fascinating yoga session that will take place as the sun sets, with one big twist – it comes with an ice cold pint of beer to go along with it to start the evening off on a great vibe. And for the more competitive amongst you? Check out the Segway obstacle course by Blissbox and GoGreen, and with a need for speed, you might even emerge champion of the course!
For the culturally inclined, there’ll be a chance to learn and discover more about the history of Keong Saik Road as a former red light district at a specially curated tour with Charmaine Leung, author of “17A Keong Saik Road”. Not to mention, there’ll even be a sneak preview of the next edition of the Affordable Art Fair with a pop-up store that will be set up. And when all that is done? You’re sure to have worked up an appetite, so be sure to check out the many food and beverage stalls that will have set up shop along Keong Saik Road, including Ho Rang I, Lime House, Neon Pigeon, Omakase Burger and Park Bench Deli, ensuring you’ll have a full belly of quality food and refreshing booze throughout the night.
