National Youth Film Awards 2018: An Open Call For Submissions
Now entering its fourth year, The National Youth Film Awards (NYFA) will be returning for yet another round of celebrating and spotlighting the greatest emerging talents in the film industry today this July.
First started in 2015 and organised by *SCAPE, NYFA is the premier film award for media students from various institutes of higher learning and media schools in Singapore, accepting short films no longer than 20 minutes for a chance to compete for awards recognising excellence in filmmaking, from acting to screenplay to direction.
Over the last three years, over 700 submissions have been received, and this year, the awards are set to expand, bigger and better than ever before with a brand new category – the Open Youth Category. The move was made in an effort to acknowledge talents beyond just those in the pre-existing Media Student Category, and allows films to be submitted from anyone aged between 15–35 years old, with or without formal media training. Together with the pre-existing Media Student Category, a total of 26 individual awards are up for grabs to be conferred upon youths proving themselves in various aspects across the entire process of film production.
NYFA 2018 also marks the first time collaboration and partnership with HOOQ, Asia’s largest video-on-demand service. With this partnership, winning films will not only receive an award, but also be showcased on HOOQ and receive exposure when broadcast to their millions of customers and viewing audience. With such a strong international distribution of these films alongside established international hits, HOOQ promises to catapult NYFA beyond award ceremony and into a platform for letting these winners enter the industry faster than ever before. In addition, winners also stand to win various attractive prizes, including cash prizes starting at $1,000 and up, professional film courses worth $15,000 and even fast track access to film grant applications with Honour Singapore.
NYFA is currently accepting submissions until 18th May 2018, after which the winners will be determined by an esteemed jury consisting of professionals from the media industry, ranging from Singapore International Film Festival Festival Director Pimpaka Towira to founder of dedicated Southeast Asian indie film site SINdie Jeremy Sing. Nominees will be announced on Friday, 6th July 2018 and winners will be revealed during the Award Ceremony on Saturday, 28th July 2018. Whether you’re a filmmaker yourself or a film enthusiast, NYFA promises to spotlight some of the brightest young talents of tomorrow, and hopefully, kickstart their careers for a promising future ahead in the industry.
NYFA is organised by *SCAPE and supported by National Youth Council and Sinema. Submissions to NYFA 2018 are open from now till 18 May 2018. For more information, visit the website here
