LONDON – Iconic British dance company New Adventures and green charity Julie’s Bicycle have got a good thing going; they’ve managed to create the first Creative Green Certified Tour with their new tour of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. The companies were also conferred the Creative Green Pioneer Award in the second annual Creative Green Awards which celebrates the many outstanding organisations taking action on climate and the environment.
Julie’s Bicycle is a charity that supports the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability, and have been working with New Adventures over the past 18 months to develop policies and seek to embed good practice around environmental sustainability. This new tour of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake will be the first Creative Green Certified Tour. Throughout the tour, New Adventures will be seeking to reduce its direct environmental impacts and will also use the opportunity to advocate to audiences and touring venues, particularly with Sadler’s Wells and Norwich Theatre Royal who are already leaders in this area.
Says Matthew Bourne: “New Adventures is thrilled to be the first touring company to be working in partnership with Julie’s Bicycle on a Creative Green Touring certification. As one of the UK’s busiest touring dance companies, we visit theatres across the world and travel to very picturesque settings. I believe that it’s important to conserve the natural beauty around us and it is something that we’re very passionate about. We hope that our Green Adventure with Julie’s Bicycle will help us to spread the word to our wonderful presenting venues and audiences around the globe about how to lead more sustainable lifestyles, so that generations to come can continue to enjoy all that our planet has to offer.”
Since premiering in 1995 at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake has become an iconic version of the ballet classic, audaciously replacing the female corps-de-ballet with a menacing male ensemble, shattering convention and subverting tradition while retaining Tchaikovsky’s original passionate vision of love. The production has since gone on to garner over thirty international theatre awards, including an Olivier in the UK and three Tonys on Broadway, and a must watch for its incredible vision, direction and sheer artistry.
Swan Lake begins touring on 22nd September at Theatre Royal, Plymouth, and plays at London’s Sadler’s Wells on 4th December 2018 – 27th January 2019. For full schedule and tickets, visit their website here
