GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA – The 2018 George Town Festival is now into its final weekend, and here, will see a unique collaboration with the Singapore Tourism Board. In ConneXions, a spiritual sequel to the successful programmes SIN-PEN Colony and Causeway Xchange, George Town will see the best of Singapore and Penang culture showcased over the three days, ranging from fashion to music, art to food.
From 31st August to 2nd September, Malaysian artist Akid One and Singaporean artist and ‘Sticker Lady’ SKL0 will come together and collaborate on a unique mural at Art Lane.
Over at ChinaHouse, have an evening of heritage cuisine with 2 Cities, 1 Heart, where Singaporean Eurasian-Peranakan Chef Damian D’Silva and Malaysian Chef Zainal. Complete your evening with drinks by bartender Matthew Chan of Michelin-starred Nouri, best known for innovative deconstructions of ingredients, techniques and flavours, celebrating people in all our differences and similarities as it nourishes you.
ConneXions will also see a presentation of W!ld Rice co-artistic director Glen Goei’s film The Blue Mansion at Penang’s Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, the place where the film itself was set and shot! The Blue Mansion is a quirky murder mystery following the ghost of a wealthy Asian tycoon who returns to his former home to uncover the mystery surrounding his death, unveiling hidden family secrets along the way. The screening will be followed by an online Q&A with director Glen Goei.
Local music will also be showcased at George Town Festival this weekend, with local acts heading up for the festival including Charlie Lim, Tabitha Nauser and .gif, who will be playing at China House on Friday and Saturday.
Even local Teochew opera troupe Nam Hwa Opera will be headed up to Penang to perform their signature Teochew operas, featuring Teochew opera child prodigy Tan Wei Tian, Yap Ting and veteran Tan Koh Noi, as they perform a series of solos and duets from Teochew opera classics.
In addition, end off the entire festival with a bang at the ZoukOut x GTF Closing Party, with Zouk house DJ Nash spinning at Muchacha QEII from 10:30pm until late.
