Following a successful participatory theatre experience back in March, Drama Box and ArtsWok Collaborative’s Both Sides, Now project returns this September. A community engagement project aiming to share and facilitate within communities what it means to live and leave well, this new edition of the project will be a participatory performance entitled Last Dance.
Last Dance will see a departure from previous editions of Both Sides, Now, going for a long term approach as opposed the usual three week engagement process. This time around, the the performance takes the form of a gathering 100 days after a man’s passing, where his wife and son ask questions about death, life and memory and try to seek closure in the process. Co-created by Kok Heng Leun, Chong Gua Khee, Muhammad Muazzam Bin Amanah & Rei Poh, Last Dance then uses the medium of dance, shared stories and open conversations to bring the community closer to understanding the plans one need to make, and the legacies we want to leave behind in the face of our own mortality.
In addition to Last Dance, the team will also be bringing a new art installation to Chong Pang, working together with a group of elderly residents in Chong Pang over the last year. Through art making workshops conducted by four artists – Han Xuemei, Alecia Neo, Jasmine Ng and Shirley Soh, these participants have been exploring the idea of personal legacy, resulting in works that discuss the elderlys’ thoughts about living and dying, and will be exhibited around the neighbourhood over a three-week period.
Join Drama Box this September as they boldly tackle the concept of death head on, daring to learn more about it, openly discuss it and share and engage with members of the public in Telok Blangah and Chong Pang.
