Countless celebrities in one place
The Edwards Twins are perhaps two of the most acclaimed and skilled celebrity impersonators alive today. As Las Vegas veterans, it was a rare and valuable opportunity to get to see them live in Singapore, and to see just why they’re so good.
Unlike pure voice impersonators, the Edwards Twins (Anthony and Eddie) elevate their act into an entire show, transforming into celebrities via makeup and costume changes as well to complete the illusion. It’s hard not to be blown away by how effective each transformation is, with makeup and costumes handled completely by the twins between each act. Having been in show business for 35 years now, it’s no wonder they’re experts at their craft.
The show begins fast and furious, with Eddie Edwards opening with one of our biggest stars today – Lady Gaga. Opening with a rendition of Paparazzi, it was almost as if Mama Monster was here on our shores once again. While Gaga may be a more familiar sight to the younger audience members, it’s the celebs of the previous generation that the brothers truly specialise in, with Eddie’s take on Bette Midler, covering her song Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, impressing the older audience members.
While Eddie covers the female personalities, Anthony tackles the male ones. There are few male celebrities more glitzy and recognizable than Elton John in his shimmering jacket, best known to the general public as having worked on the soundtrack for Disney’s The Lion King, and singing both the Circle of Life and Can You Feel The Love Tonight, ‘John’ was joined by professional dancers donning animal costumes typical of the African Savannah, adding to the essence and mood of the act.
The twins are so good at what they do, it’s even been said that celebrities themselves think they’re lip syncing while onstage (they’re not). To prove their authenticity and range of skills, the twins performed a quickfire round out of costume, as they covered Sonny and Cher’s ‘I Got You Babe’, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, and the late Tina Turner’s ‘Simply The Best’.
Towards the end of the night, the twins ended off on a high with a duet of Barbra Streisand and Andrea Bocelli singing The Prayer, before ‘Bocelli’ ends with a tribute to the late producer Errol Pang – a rendition of Sinatra’s My Way.
As a performance that was initially conceived by Pang, this was truly a beautiful swansong for the producer, who passed in June of cancer, never getting to see this show in Singapore (proceeds from this show would go to cancer foundations). It’s through the efforts of people such as Stephen Boy Francis and Richard Tan of Generasia that this show was possible, filling the entire audience with plenty of laughs and heart over the night, and testament to the pure talent and hard work the Edwards Twins have put into honing their craft for a true class double act.
