Preview: Fat Kids Are Harder To Kidnap X by How Drama

Ten years is a long time to kidnap a bunch of fat kids, but local theatre group How Drama obviously has a winning formula with the tenth anniversary of ever popular play marathon Fat Kids Are Harder To Kidnap this November!

The format of the show is simple: featuring five cast members, comprising Ross Nasir, Nicholas Bloodworth, Carina McWhinnie, Victoria Chen and Jun Teoh, the team will go on a madcap adventure as they attempt to perform 31 plays in an hour, with the audience deciding the order of the plays by shouting the corresponding number when the actors give them the cue.

Each short playlet is a riot, tackling the year’s most prominent issues, current affairs and trending topics from the MRT breakdowns to the Trump-Kim summit. In addition, the team will be bringing back some of their “greatest hits” from past editions, including a sketch about a grammar conscious loan shark and Pulp Fiction – a sketch inspired by the controversy caused over children’s book And Tango Makes Three.

Over the years, Fat Kids has only grown in stature, having performed at the prestigious John F. Kennedy Centre For The Performing Arts in Washington, DC, as part of the SG50 celebrations in 2015, and warmly received at the Paris Fringe Festival in Paris in 2017, praised for its explosive energy and audience integration. Says actress Ross Nasir, who has been with the show since its beginnings in 2008: “There aren’t many productions that can say they have been around for 10 years. We’ve done that, and we’re so excited to reprise some of the old favourites for our local fans.”

This will also be the first year Fat Kids features a special Gala Performance, which includes appearances by special guests. Attendees of the Gala will also leave with a one-of-a-kind Fat Kids survival kit. Says director and co-writer Melissa Sim: “This show has been a labour of love from day one and it’s a privilege to be able to continue doing what we love.”

Come find out just what makes this zany, big hearted show such a hit over its last ten years in the scene and have a rollicking good time with Fat Kids Are Harder to Kidnap X, playing just for one weekend at the Esplanade Annexe Studio.

Fat Kids Are Harder to Kidnap X plays from 9th to 11th November at the Esplanade Annexe Studio. Tickets available from Peatix
